UCL Rewind: Real Madrid roll, English teams fall, and more

Real Madrid fell short in their quest to finish at the top of the Group of Death, but an impressive 4-1 thumping of Ajax on Tuesday gives the Spanish champions some momentum heading into the knockout rounds.

Jose Callejon scored a pair of goals while Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka added a goal apiece to send Real Madrid into the Round of 16 team, behind Borussia Dortmund, which clinched first place in Group D after posting a 1-0 victory against last-place Manchester City.

Arsenal saw their hopes of finishing first in their group after dropping a loss to Olympiakos. That defeat, coupled with Schalke’s 1-1 draw against Montpellier, earned the Germans first place in Group B.

Malaga finished unbeaten in Group C after a 2-2 draw against Anderlecht. Oguchi Onyewu started for Malaga while Sacha Kljestan started and set up the equalizer for Anderlecht, which fell short of qualifying for the Europa League slot in the group after Zenit St. Petersburg upset AC Milan.

Paris St. Germain finished atop Group A after beating FC Porto, 2-1, in one of the day’s more exciting match-ups. Thiago Silva and Ezequiel Lavezzi provided the scores for PSG.
