Beckham to sign with Paris St. Germain

Almost two months after winning his second MLS Cup title and embarking on what he called a new challenge in his career, David Beckham has agreed to sign a contract with Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1.

The 37-year-old midfielder had been rumored to be headed to the Parc des Princes for weeks, but had not revealed publicly or privately where he would eventually be headed. Now a deal appears to be in place, with PSG set to hold a press conference

The former England international has spent this week training with Arsenal, in a bid to stay fit, since his contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy ended last December.

What do you think of the move? See Beckham making an impact with PSG? Think he should have stayed in MLS another season?

  1. Thanks to David for his service to Los Angeles, he was a great leader as well as creative mind from the midfield. It is rare you see a player continue to produce at such a high level at this stage in his career. I wish David the best of luck with his future teams and will be rooting for him.

  2. What amuses me is the concept of a player playing “for free” at his next destination who was so expensive for our purposes we created a salary cap rule to accommodate him. In fact the reason he can probably play for “one Euro” is how much he’s extracted from previous stops, endorsements, etc.

5 months at a building PSG side for an older player is basically a victory lap. Make a few appearances for a known quantity coach he’s worked with before. Retire in Europe instead of here. To me it’s kind of selfish because if he was willing to play for nothing, he could have given MLS the honor of retiring him, or he could have gone to a similarly new league like Australia and helped build them with his name. By going to established, rich PSG he’s basically putting himself center spotlight.

  3. OK- LETS PLAY THE COMPARISON GAME…. Becks goes pro at 17, plays on a team that plays its league games, plus Champions league play, and goes over 100 caps & captains his country. Plays the same type of schedule in Spain, reinvents himself in USA..including loan stints in the offseason, while coming back from an achilles tear….. And now at 37 is going to play for PSG
OK-NOW ON THE OTHER HAND…… We have Landon, who at 30 needs a nap, a hug, and some “me time”……

Lets face it..like him or hate him …Becks is a winner

      • So I assume you never complain about being hungry or that you don’t have enough money because there are kids in Sudan who haven’t eaten in days and have parents earning less than 2 dollars a day, right?

Believe it or not, different people have different feelings about their jobs…what a stupid post.

      • Yes, you are correct that people have different “feelings” about their jobs… and in this case Beckham “feels” that he is still playing at a high enough level to continue to re-invent himself and perform on a Champions League level team….
        While Landon
        “feels” burned out,
        “feels” unappreciated,
“feels” like there isnt a challenge for him to push himself to get better,
“feels” that his body is too tired since turning pro at the same age as Beckham..(even though he’s never had a major injury & most world class players of his age play for club, country, & additional tournament competitions)

So lets review… LD has been the poster boy for USA soccer, has played much less total minutes than many contemporaries his age who play more club games, more games for country, and more games in European play….and is saying he’s too tired and burned out…. give me a break

Fact: Winners push themselves, they dont quit, they dont run, the dont make excuses, they constantly move forward, re-invent & challenge themselves…
Fact:Look at Dempsey, left MLS early to get better when people said he wasnt ready..while LD cowered after one bad stint at Bayern before going to Everton. Dempsey outperformed himself and is pushing to play Champions League ball..while LD is taking his siesta…
        Thats what WINNERS do

Fact: Winners like Payton Manning get 4 neck surgeries & work their butt off to come back and throw for 4,000 yards
Fact: Winners like Dempsey & Michael Bradley keep pushing their own skill set to get better
Fact: Winners like Becks can handle the spotlight & work hard to stay fit physically & mentally despite their age & mileage

FACT: Your reference to kids in The Sudan is about the worse analogy & makes no sense

        FACT: LD=Quitter… Becks= Winner

        What a stupid reply

      • LD = no quit in stoppage time to score the biggest World Cup goal this country has seen. That Fact must really bug you. Were you one of the US ‘fans’ who actually felt crushed when he scored that goal because you don’t like him (obviously)?

        +1 Dimidri.

      • Not at all Beachbum, I was screaming like every USA fan- and I DID like him, and I liked his game more…
        BUT
You have illustrated my point exactly.. that was in 2010, and the guy is only 30 and is NOT acting like a winner- period…
        +1 Bac

      • I don’t beleive you, and i did not illustrate your point. Take your false rhetorical semantics and put them where they belong…the garbage 🙂

      • This is just silly. “Here is one guy doing stuff, ergo everybody must meet this arbitrary standard”.

If you want to talk about Landon staying in MLS, or not going to Europe that is a separate discussion, not enjoying playing soccer has nothing to do with being a “winner” or not (btw congrats on being the only person in the world who thinks Peyton is a winner), otherwise I guess Barry Saunders, Sandy Kofax, etc. are all losers.

Also unlike Beckham, who I like, Landon is actually putting the team first-he’s not going on loans that hurt the team he plays for during the season, he’s saying “there are people who care more than me right now, they deserve to play atm, not me)

    • Wait until we later find out the charity is for supporting the French kids he leaves behind after a year or two away from the wife. 🙂

  4. Is it a 2 year contract or 1 because if he goes for 2 year contract I see him in Brazil 2014 for sure. but the sad part is that MLS did not go after kaka, drogba, anelka, sneijder, forlan and many other players.

      That’s simply not true.

At least half the names you’ve listed MLS clubs publicly and the other half courted them behind the scenes reported by soccer journalists in the States/abroad.

  5. The liabilities that were so easy for him to hide in MLS by stuffing him into the central role and not requiring him to hustle will be exposed as he tries to play midfield for a real team.

As much as I hate him now, he could have ridden MLS for another 3-5 years making his millions and not looking like he lost a step. I’m pretty sure at PSG he is going to be nothing more than an attacking midfielder who lacks the legs to run from box to box like he did in his prime.

  6. I think he’s earned a lot of people’s respect in this country that otherwise didn’t give it to him before or during his tenure.

    Best of luck, David.

That said, I also echo the sarcastic sentiments about Ligue 1/PSG being a retirement league and/or club.

  7. I don’t see enough coverage of Ligue 1 to be able to tell if he will be able to really contribute there, especially to the team at the top of the table. But considering the players that move from L1 to the BPL there must be a high level of talent there. It will be interesting to see how this goes and if he can still compete at this level, which I would expect is a fair bit higher than MLS. Any details on contract length or $$?

  8. I figured it would be PSG.

he said no to the A League. I thought he might have considered a 2-3year deal in China and help promote the game and his brand there

    • As always, money talks, BS walks.

Remember initially he said he wanted to further development/popularity of football somewhere else, blah, blah, blah …

He could have gone to Oz or China if that was really his intention.

      • Funny thing is, it looks like he isn’t taking a salary… donating it directly to a charity.

Expect to see him back in the US soon, pursuing that MLS ownership option.

  9. Wow, what a shock…Little Davey went to a team that already had talent on it. Too bad he never really had the ‘nads to test his skills (assuming he has any other than bending it…) Now, if he would have joined ‘arry at QPR and saved them from relegation, then Little Davey would show the world he really is a leader (and doesn’t just find a team whereever Posh wants to live…)
