Soccer Saturday: Your Running Commentary

For all the success Manchester United has had in the past decade, one sore spot for the English club has been the team’s inability to win an FA Cup.

The Red Devils have gone nine years since last lifting the FA Cup, a streak they will look to move toward snapping when they face West Ham United today in a match airing on national television (Noon, FOX).

The Mexican League is back in full swing, with Club American facing Monterrey in one of the day’s more high-profile match-ups. Herculez Gomez and Santos Laguna will take on San Luis in another match-up to watch.

If you will be watching today’s soccer action, please feel free to share your thoughts, opinions and some play-by-play in the comments section below.

  1. So, you know how every once in awhile you see something live and have to go back and watch it again just to make sure you actually saw what you thought you saw? Yeah, the Giggs to RVP goal was one of those moments.

  2. RVP and Giggs just connected on a goal that songs should be written about. RVP’s first touch on a 50 yard screaming long ball was godlike.

  3. This is the first time I’ve listened to a soccer game on the radio, and I must say it’s pretty enjoyable.

Fulham v Blackpool, the bow-legged Greece Captain Giorgios Karagounis tied it up at 1-1 in the 80th minute which what was described as a terrific finish, outside the box to the top left corner.

    • And we have a replay! Gentlemen Jim is pretty convinced their goal was aided by a handball, we’ll see on replay. We seemed to control the game though, but of course only the goals matter.

  5. Lichaj starts for Villa (in what clearly is not a first choice 11). 1-0 Ipswich. BBC match tracker gives the goal to Michael Chopra, but I’ve seen suggestions on a Villa forum that it could be a Lichaj OG. Given has apparently been busy in goal since Ipswich scored.

    • Bale and Dempsey have not spent much time on the field together in the last few weeks because of Clint’s injury, but it seemed clear to me during November and early December that they get on well together and that Bale, who is an incredible talent, respects Dempsey and like playing with him.

(Now would be the time for the Fulham trolls to swoop in and start bad-mouthing Dempsey. But I have a feeling we won’t be hearing much from them today :-))

      • Would it be trolling to point out that one shouldn’t read too much into this Spurs performance today given they are playing a League 1 side?

      • There were some Spurs’ fans that were skeptical about Deuce’s talent..But I think Dempsey was pretty respected around the EPL among the players before joining the Spurs.

  6. it looks like newcastle is going to be in a real religation battle this season, now that they dont have the services of demba ba, and their version of stu holden, ben arfa, is out. tottenham have assou ekotto back and that should be a boost to deuces production, maybe even a boon.

  7. Anyone know where I could find a feed for Spurs v Coventry? I checked firstrowsports and they don’t have one posted. Any help would be much appreciated.
