Wednesday Kickoff: Kompany red card rescinded, Guardiola dreams of EPL job, and more

BY DAN KARELL

Manchester City were delivered some unexpected good news on Wednesday morning, as captain Vincent Kompany’s red card from the 2-0 win at Arsenal last Sunday was rescinded by the English FA.

After the match, Manchester City launched an appeal, which successfully overturned the red card and three-match ban that came with it. The Belgian was shown a red card for a strong tackle on Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere in the 75th minute.

Kompany is now cleared to play in the Citizens next match this Saturday against Fulham.

Here are some other stories to get your Wednesday started:

GUARDIOLA WANTS CHALLENGE OF MANAGING IN PREMIER LEAGUE

In what seems like a broken record, two of the worlds biggest managers in the world have stated their desires to manage in England, two days in a row.

Following yesterdays statements from current Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho, former Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola announced his intentions to someday manage in the English Premier League. Guardiola even went so far as to say he had never been able to “realize his dream” to play in England full-time, but hoped that he would have his chance in management.

JUVENTUS JOINS TRANSFER RACE FOR RODRIGUEZ

James Rodriguez is one of the brightest talents in the world, and Serie A champions Juventus are working on bringing him in to Turin.

The 21-year-old is currently on the books at Porto, where he signed in 2010 from Banfield in Argentina. The only thing stopping the Colombian native from joining the Old Lady already is a €45 million release clause in his contract.

The playmaking Colombian midfielder, who is already being compared to the legendary Carlos “El Pibe” Valderrama, has scored eight goals in 15 games for Porto and has been recently linked with a move to Manchester United as well.

TREZEGUET TO MISS ARGENTINE SUPERCLASICO

Former Juventus star and France international David Trezeguet has announced that due to injury, he won’t feature in this weekend’s Superclasico between his club River Plate and arch-rivals Boca Juniors.

The 35-year-old striker is still working his way back to fitness after the off-season, as the Argentina summer tournament kicks into action on February 10. Trezeguet scored one goal in ten appearences for River in the opening season.

River Plate are playing Boca Juniors in three friendlies to help the squad warm up for the start of the season. Their last meeting was in league play last October, with the result being a 2-2 draw.

  1. While I didn’t think Kompany deserved to see red while watching live (yellow at most, not even necessarily a card IMO), I’m very surprised he won his appeal. They’re usually only successful when it was a blatant mistake by the ref, and his really was a judgement call. I don’t like City, but justice was served.

Pep to Bayern seems to have come out nowhere. Or have I been living in a cave? Thought he was headed to England for sure.

      • GolTV still has Bundesliga. At least for the remaining season. They are showing multiple Bundesliga games this weekend. beIN Sport only got the rights to Italy, Spain, and France for North America.

  2. Bayern just announced Pep taking over in the summer. Good move for him better than Chelski they don’t run coaches out of town so quickly plus with financial fair play coming up gonna kneed a club thats in the black year in year out.
