Whitecaps part ways with Bonjour

Martin Bonjour has been suspiciously absent from the start of the Vancouver Whitecaps’ preseason camp, and now we know why.

Days after saying that Bonjour was missing because of personal reasons, the Whitecaps waived the Argentine centerback. Bonjour played just one season with the Whitecaps, scoring one goal in 28 appearances in 2012.

“We are thankful for the contributions Martin made to the club and wish him the best of luck,” Whitecaps FC president Bob Lenarduzzi said in a statement.

Bonjour was a de facto starter across the Whitecaps’ back line during the opening months of the season, but was reverted to the bench for the club’s last four games after Andy O’Brien claimed a starting spot next to Jay DeMerit.

What do you think of the Whitecaps’ decision to waive Bonjour? Hoping your MLS team picks him up?

    • All jokes aside, was Bonjour good at Vancouver last year? Did fans like him? I didn’t follow VW too closely, but don’t recall hearin much bad. Is it just a matter o having cheaper options?

      • Yep that’s exactly it, cheaper options who ideally will not be the card magnet that Bonjour is. His hard nosed style was fun to watch though.

      • The problem with Bonjour was his decision making capacity. Although a serviceable centre back, Bonjour managed to pick up yellow cards in bunches as well as a couple of reds. A player who you can’t trust, particularly at the money Bonjour was being paid (in the neighbourhood of $600,000 if I am not mistaken) is definitely a liability and the ‘Caps have a minimum of four CB’s in camp at the moment hence Mr. Bonjour’s departure.
