The Chicago Fire announced Wednesday a deal with Toronto FC to bring in forward Quincy Amarikwa, adding much needed attacking depth.
The Fire sent back a first round selection in the 2014 MLS Supplemental Draft in exchange for Amarikwa, a U.C. Davis product and former member of San Jose and Colorado before his brief stint with Toronto.
“We are pleased to add Quincy to our roster,” said Fire President of Soccer Operations Javier Leon. “We were able to evaluate him during preseason to see how well he fits in our system. He’s a talented player and will strengthen our squad as we begin the 2013 season.”
Amarikwa had been in training with the Fire as of late, leading to speculation about a potential deal. He played briefly as a guest player for the Fire on Feb. 9 vs. San Jose, contributing to the team’s 1-0 victory.
He was also a member of the 2010 MLS Champion Colorado Rapids along with current Fire teammates Jeff Larentowicz and Wells Thompson. Over the span of three seasons with the Rapids, Amarikwa tallied 3 goals and 1 assist in 31 appearances. After signing with Toronto FC on July 21, 2012, he added 2 goals and 1 assist in 14 appearances.
Amarikwa will be available for selection by head coach Frank Klopas for this Sunday’s opener in Los Angeles.
i remember touting him on this site years back when he first came to the quakes…..rumors of a training field fight with nick garcia and subsequents confrontations with the coaching staff suggested an immaturity that kept him from ever reaching his potential with san jose….perhaps he is finally growing up
Amerikwa is like letoux and kenny cooper in some aspects that he,is very talented but for some reason very disposable.
I have never even heard of this guy but if he is anything like Kenny Copper, he is going to drive me crazy. Score two goals in a game and then wonder why he is invisible on the field for the next month. I hope he has grown up and can be a nice help for the FIRE.
