Americans Abroad: Weekend Preview

By FRANCO PANIZO

If Joe Corona and Edgar Castillo can build on their midweek performance, Atlas is in deep, deep trouble.

Having each scored a goal in Club Tijuana’s Copa Libertadores rout of Bolivian side San Jose on Tuesday, the Xolos duo will aim to improve on their most recent outing while trying to help Tijuana win their fourth straight game across all competitions. Tijuana is currently on a good run of form – having scored seven goals and allowing none in their last three matches – and they will want to continue that as a win over second-placed Atlas could see them leapfrog Los Zorros.

On the other side of the pond, Jermaine Jones and Schalke will try to begin a winning streak when they visit VfL Wolfsburg. Schalke picked up their first win in some time last weekend, so the club should be in good spirits on Saturday against relegation-threatened Wolfsburg.

Another Bundesliga team attempting to fight the drop is Hoffenheim and they are set to partake in one of the weekend’s more intriguing matches involving Americans Abroad. Fabian Johnson, Danny Williams and Hoffenheim host league-leaders Bayern Munich on Sunday and a result there could give Hoffenheim enough confidence to go on a run in an effort to relegation. Gaining a result won’t be easy though, not against a Bayern side unbeaten in their past 21 matches in all competitions and winners of nine straight.

Here is who the Americans Abroad take on this weekend:

  1. FYI Stoke City American Update –

Huth is out for three games and Pulis says either Cameron and Wilson are likely to slot in and start at centerback.

Etherington has not trained this week and is a game time decision. Shea would likely start in his abscence.

Keep a close eye as this may non tv game may be perfect for a web link viewing.

  2. Does any know why ESPN3 has not broadcast a game that features Jose Altidore in over a month. Who do they think Americans want to see in the Dutch league anyway?

    • ESPN has been broadcasting the Eredivisie since before Jozy signed with AZ, mostly in Spanish. I imagine the Eredivisie chooses the games, with input from ESPN.

  3. Stuart Holden replaced Mark Davies on Tuesday early in the game after Davies went down with an apparent knee injury. This morning, Bolton announced Davies is out up to 10 months with a torn ACL.

I don’t think Holden particularly needed an injury from one of Bolton’s top players to get him back in the lineup, but it certainly seems it may speed up the process. First start tomorrow?

  4. Every morning I wake up, stare out into the horizon, and ask for a true CAM to emerge for the USNT team.

Come on Corona/Mixx/Freddy Adu(sighhhh) I’m looking at you.

Then I light a candle for Holden’s knees and Donovan’s head, and continue on with my day.

yeah, my first reaction was that listing freiburg in 5th place was a typo, cause really? freiburg? good for him. hometown kid, i think.

    • Players born in Las Cruces, New Mexico (Castillo) and Los Angeles, CA (Corona) who play for the team in Tijuana, the “Xoloitzcuintles” who are the current Liga Mx Champions in Mexico. They also have won their 1st 2 games in Copa Libertadores…away in Colombia 1-0 and trashing Bolivian side San Jose 4-0 at home.

In Colombia, Castillo who plays Left Back had the assist to the only and winning goal…..and on the game this week….both Castillo and Corona scored the 1st & 3rd goal respectively……Castillo even helped set up the goal that Corona scored.

Both have the ability to play on the wing, Castillo at Left back too, but the pressing need is wing midfielders or central ATTACKING mids so that’s where Corona could help as well as on the wing….. I hope Klinsmann uses one of them vs Costa Rica, because we need wide and 1v1 play

    • Is it just me, or do teams front-loaded with Americans always seem to be in relegation trouble? And if they aren’t, it’s financial mismanagement.
