Americans Abroad: Weekend Preview

By FRANCO PANIZO

If the U.S. Men’s National Team’s World Cup qualifying loss to Honduras on Wednesday left a bad taste in your mouth, this weekend’s high-profile tilts might just be the perfect remedy.

Tim Howard, one of the better U.S. players on Wednesday, will be involved in one of those games, as Everton visits his former club, Manchester United, on Sunday. The Toffees are entering the match against the Premiership frontrunners riding a good run of form that has seen them go unbeaten in their last seven games across all competitions, and Howard will be aiming to try and help them extend that against a red-hot Manchester United side that has not suffered a loss since early December.

Jermaine Jones also has a mouthwatering match on tap. Schalke 04 visit Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich on Saturday, and a surprise win for Schalke could put them four points shy of a Champions League spot. Jones may not start the game given the quick turnaround from Wednesday’s qualifier in San Pedro Sula, but he might be one of the primary options off the bench.

Another battle in Germany that will draw some interest is Hertha Berlin’s home game versus FC Union Berlin on Monday. The Berlin derby should see John Anthony Brooks resume his starting role in Hertha’s back line as the club attempts to add to its 18-game winning streak in league play.

  1. News out today that Tottenham will play the Jamaican national team May 23 in the Bahamas. Am I the only one that would be worried about Dempsey facing those thugs in a friendly just two weeks before the USMNT faces Jamaica in Kingston? Jamaica would most likely not be shedding tears if Clint would pick up a knock and miss the USMNT-Jamaica game. I honestly hope AVB sits Clint for that friendly.

  2. Corriere cello sport is reporting that Roma will indeed switch from Zeman’s 433 to a 4312. It’s reported that DeRossi will claim the central midfield role in front of the defense. No mention of MB, but I’m guessing he will take one of the two remaining midfield spots, at least this week. One of his main mf rivals, the Greek player, tachsidis (sp?) is out due to suspension. However, he has to prove himself all over again against a slew of young talent (marquinhos from Brazil and Florenzi from Italy) as well as the aforementioned derossi and veterans Perrotta and Taddei. I think Florenzi, tachsidis, and Marquinhos are all more adapted to being wide mf players….but not sure what the 4312 will really look like.
Personally, I think he will still play plenty, but may not be the automatic starter he was under Zeman.

  3. Ives, I don’t understand the legitimacy of the “Americans Abroad” thread.

If an American player goes further afield, it complicates matters. The further afield you go, the more problematic it gets for the media and the USA manager to follow you.

How can we be sure of what’s going on in a country so distant? Surely this is a huge problem for someone like yourself, in the media.
