Sermanni releases 23-player USWNT roster for Algarve Cup

The U.S. Women’s National Team is a couple of weeks away from partaking in the 2013 Algarve Cup, and now we know who is headed to Portugal to participate in the tournament.

U.S. head coach Tom Sermanni named a 23-player roster for the competition on Thursday and it includes forwards Alex Morgan and Abby Wambach as well as midfielders Megan Rapinoe and Carli Loyd. Other notable players on the roster are forward Sydney Leroux and defender Ali Krieger.

One notable omission from the team is Hope Solo. The veteran goalkeeper was left off the roster due to a wrist injury that she has been playing through for some time. Solo has damage to ligaments in her right wrist and surgery may be required to get her back to full health.

The U.S. open their Algarve Cup campaign on March 6 against Iceland.

Here is the full 23-player roster:

Goalkeepers (3): Nicole Barnhart (FC Kansas City), Ashlyn Harris (Duisburg), Jill Loyden (Sky Blue FC)

Defenders (7): Rachel Buehler (Portland Thorns FC), Crystal Dunn (North Carolina), Whitney Engen (Liverpool FC), Ali Krieger (Washington Spirit), Kelley O’Hara (Sky Blue FC), Christie Rampone (Sky Blue FC), Becky Sauerbrunn (FC Kansas City)

Midfielders (8): Yael Averbuch (Göteborg FC), Shannon Boxx (Chicago Red Stars), Lauren Cheney (FC Kansas City), Tobin Heath (Paris Saint-German), Carli Lloyd (Western NY Flash), Kristie Mewis (FC Kansas City), Heather O’Reilly (Boston Breakers), Megan Rapinoe (Olympique Lyonnais)

Forwards (5): Lindsey Horan (Paris Saint-German), Sydney Leroux (Boston Breakers), Alex Morgan (Portland Thorns FC), Christen Press (Tyresö FF), Abby Wambach (Western NY Flash)

  1. Hey Ives, greetings,

Would be great to get some more live chat going for our USWNT,

considering they are the best team in the world for their gender.

Also find it atrocious how hard it is to see them play.

Our national teams should always be free to see. every other country expects this.

Particularly since they represent a nation and are ultimately sponsored by the people.

  2. Whitney Engen (Liverpool FC), Tobin Heath (Paris Saint-German), Megan Rapinoe (Olympique Lyonnais), Lindsey Horan (Paris Saint-German).

Am I missing something here? Why are a few of our women playing for historic clubs like these, yet Morgan Wambach are playing for an American league that has shown time and again they are not interested in your services other then the National team??

I don’t even mean that to be rude or insulting but it’s just the honest truth.

    • Because Morgan and Wambach would rather help build soccer in the US than help football in France and have the financial where with all to do it.

    • the FA was close to abandoning the women’s league in England . . . . the players are semi pro in England, and they only train twice a week.

France has a concentration of good players, but the quality of the play in the US is a lot higher across the board. There is more depth and quality on every roster.

Shouldn’t make an assumption that the economic instability of the various leagues means they are inferior in terms of play . . . there just aren’t major clubs associated with the women’s teams to eat the costs, like WNBA model or the Liverpool/Lyon etc setup.

  3. Good to see some new faces (Press, Mewis, Dunn) and newish faces (Averbuch, Engen) for Algarve this year. We may have seen the last of Mitts and Lindsey, too.

Anyone know if there is a way to watch the tournament? (there hasn’t been in the past, though it does take place in a sort of remote vacationing area and doesn’t have many spectators)

  4. Ives, is Ohai injured? I thought it was strange she didn’t get called in from the U20s with Dunn and Johnston, and she isn’t on the current rosters for the U20 and U23 teams that are traveling to tournaments. What’s going on with Ohai?

    • Well, she is in college and was away for the U20s and a full college season. She may have decided to focus on school this semester. Maybe she wants to graduate early like Mewis.

      • Thanks Joe, that sounds plausible…i thought she was a grad. She’s going to be a demon on the flank for the nats…amazing speed and finishing ability. Maybe someday we’ll see Press and Morgan up top with Heath and Ohai on the flanks and Pinoe instead of Loyd at ACM. Or just put Ohai up top with Morgan, that would be a phenomenal tandem.
