Soccer Sunday: Your Running Commentary

By MICHAEL KLINE

Brentford and Leeds United will be looking to catch the FA Cup upset fever ahead of their fifth round matches on Sunday against Premier League powerhouses.

A day after Oldham made Arsenal the latest FA Cup upset victim, Brentford will travel to London to face defending tournament champions Chelsea, while Leeds United heads to the Etihad to take on Manchester City.

Later in the day, Swansea City will travel to Anfield in the weekend’s only Premier League action. Liverpool, who haven’t won in their last five matches, will try to avenge their 3-1 loss to Swansea earlier in the season, which gave them an early exit from the Capital One Cup. Brendan Rodgers has been given a huge boost with the availability of Daniel Sturridge, who was forced to miss Liverpool’s league match against West Bromwich Albion due to fitness concerns.

In Italy, Napoli has the opportunity to move within two points of league-leaders Juventus    in their match against Sampdoria. Napoli have Francesco Totti’s right-footed blast to thank for leading Roma past defending Serie A champions Juventus 1-0. Goal-machine Edinson Cavani will be fancied to add to his tally of eighteen league goals, and guide Napoli to within a match of The Old Lady in the process.

  1. In his defense, sportscenter app doesn’t reflect any substitutions being made. Also, please don’t turn this website into a political comment sections as well. I’d like to continue following these comments.

    • Zac, noone cares if you continue to follow the comments at all. Fox news single handedly contributes to american stupidity. They spew facts that are just false, and I’m not sure if the next day during their corrections they spend as much time correcting them as they did spewing them. For example, the reason why Germany has much more solar powered energy sources than America does, isn’t becuase Germany is sunnier than America. And the tesla electric sports Car actually does perform and work as advertised, and there is not a single study ever to support that easier access to guns will decrease crime/murder. If you want to live in ignorance, then go stay in your church, keep watching foxnews and listening to rush limbaugh, but don’t come on a American soccer website where you’re average poster is going to be a little more intelligent and less obvlious then you’re ignorant buddy you probably go fishing, make gay jokes with, and vote republican alongside… Simpletons smh…

      • “facts that are false”…That’s interesting.

My eyes glaze over at hearing political arguments, especially when using words like “spew” or “spewing”.

      • Every single allegedly smart comment you made was rendered moot when you used you’re incorrectly. You thinking that your political opinions on a soccer website matter means you’re an idiot.

      • Ummm I type from my cell phone didnt know the measure of a written statement was whether or not I checked the autocorrect while I swyped with one finger while I replied to that comment as I was taking a duece… wow I hope you’re able to sleep a little better with your ignorance since you ignored my statement due to the misuse of your vs you’re

      • Not that I want to make this a political debate because hate politics but there is also no evidence that strict gun laws will reduce violence. Chicago has the strictest gun control and yet they have very high gun violence. No one is unbiased just as everybody stereotypes people and to act as if you dont is the biggest case of ignorance and stupidity there is. We all percieve things differently in this world. Some people actually believe Castillo is a good player

      • It’s not like Chicago has borders. It does sit in the immediate vicinity of heavy gun possession areas. Guns flow into Chicago like water flowing down a mountain.

The mountain of evidence in regards to the effectiveness of strict gun laws is overwhelming.

For comparison, here are other countries hom1cide rates per 100,000 persons (all these countries have much stricter laws)

        Japan – .02

        South Korea – .04

        Qatar – .18

        UK – .04

        Poland – .02

        Netherlands – .2

        Spain – .15

        Australia – .09

        Germany – .06

        Italy – .36

        Israel – .94

        Canada – .5

        France .22

        United States – 3.6

      • Ives, you’ve got left wing diarrhea of the keyboard in aisle 2.

As for me, the only left wing talking point I’m interested in is if we should recall Beasley for the USMNT.

  2. I’m watching Hoffenheim-Stuttgart. Hoffenheim have no width in there build up. Danny Williams is playing great. He got a yellow card. Hoffenheim defense is not applying much pressure at all. Kudos for Williams showing grit. Fabian Johnson is showing well as a left back. In the first half, the best chance for Hoffenheim, was when Fabian Johnson moved up into midfield, cut in , and made a pass that turned into a shot on goal. So, in essence, Fabian is providing some width from a back position. I understand Fabian Johnson is a highly rated Left Back in the Bundesliga, but is definitely a underrated LW. F Johnson would help stretch the Stuttgart D in midfield providing gaps for through passes and diagonal runs.

    • Hoffenheim is gonna drop. It’s pretty much unavoidable.

Fabian will definitely find another home w/in the 1.Bundesliga, but Williams may not.

If Danny sticks w/ Hoffenheim, Williams will probably start the 2.Bundesliga season with a guaranteed starting spot that will be his to lose. That said, if the team continues to falter and they don’t bolster their defensive corps, he could end up in a bad situation.

    • If you mean, “would he attend if he could,” the answer is yes.

If you mean, “is he good enough?” the answer is, he’s one of the top 5 in the U-20 pool.

If you mean, “if he didn’t have a broken leg, would he be there?” the answer is no. Liverpool didn’t release him for qualifying and added him to their Europa League roster to help make their case, even if they didn’t plan on playing him.

If you mean, “would he have been at the U-20 WC after/if the U-20s qualify, the answer is maybe. While Liverpool is obligated to release him if he wants to go, sometimes clubs get around these things by convincing the player to say no.

    • Thanks NE Matt,

Agree with all the attributes you mention, and two things thing that impresses me the most in watching this clip of LD’s 49 USMNT goals is the timing of runs into the box and the precision dribbling and goal placement. Love his top shelf screamer against Slovenia in WC 2010.

Cheers from the Wootown in central mass.

      • I agree Citronomics – The runs, follow-through and extra hustle are what made ~25 of these goals, not the least of which was the winner vs Algeria. This vid a great angle of him passing right and then making his follow up run to the center of the box to put away the rebound. We don’t have that anymore.

Cheers back at ya from New Bedford, MA

      • Also I notcied a lot of good wing play from Beasley and others. Dempsey is also very good at timing runs but somebody needs to be outside feeding them the ball

    • Good memories right there. Definitely certain qualities to his game that no one else in our pool has. Sure some of the kids show promise, but to think any one of them could perform with that type of consistency is a long shot. Here’s to adding more to that clip from 2014 Brazil! Cheers

    • dude, thanks for posting that. i guess i kind of forgot how often LD was able to get behind defenses in his younger years and he was absolutely lethal in one on one situations. soooo many important goals throughout the years too, from WCQ and world cups to gold cup and confed cup. LD is a true legend.

    • Unfortunately he only brings that to the table when his heart is in it. If he knows he’s not giving 100%, we can’t afford to pine away in his absence.
