Abby Wambach could not have asked for a better way to celebrate her latest milestone.

Playing in her 200th game for the U.S. Women’s National Team, Wambach scored the winner in the Americans’ 3-1 victory over Scotland at LP Field in Nashville, Tenn. on Wednesday night. Wambach netted on a diving header early in the second half, leaving her five goals shy of tying Mia Hamm’s record for most goals all-time.

Wambach’s winner, which came following a cross from Sydney Leroux in the 51st minute, was sandwiched in between strikes from Megan Rapinoe and Christen Press in the 21st and 54th minutes, respectively. Scotland pulled one back late through Suzanne Grant but there was no stopping Tom Sermanni from improving to 2-0 as U.S. head coach, with both wins coming against his native country.

The U.S. will next travel to Portugal to partake in the annual Algarve Cup. The Americans open their campaign in the competition against Iceland on March 6.

What do you think of the USWNT’s 3-1 win over Scotland? How many more games do you think it will take for Wambach to break Hamm’s record? Like what you’ve seen so far from the USWNT under Sermanni?

  1. Your right they are fun to warch. A great mix of talent with alot of heart. Still, losing to Japan in the world cup was rough. Who thinks pulling Rapinoe in the second half of that game against Japan was a huge mistake? Just saying……

  2. My problem with these non competitve games is not the money. I think these athletes desever all the money they can get. My concern is these games can hinder, and even deminish the teams growth.

    • U.S. forward Alex Morgan did not suit up for the match for precautionary reasons. She trained in the two days prior to the match after twisting her ankle in the first match against Scotland, but the U.S. team will leave for the Algarve Cup in Portugal in less than two weeks and the coaching staff wanted to ensure her health for the highly competitive tournament. 3. I hate to say it, and I wish the men’s team had this problem, but the USWNT is so boring. They’ve won what 15/20 games in a row now? Most by pretty large margins for soccer. There comes a point when watching a team so dominate becomes a chore. There’s a pronounce lack of competitiveness in women’s soccer.

    • Watch the Algarve Cup and you’ll see several of the much more competitive sides. But of course it’s nothing like the situation with the men’s game in that regard.

  4. I think it is time to put Rapinoe in the middle of the park and give her the keys to the offense. She looks like a 10 to me, not an 8. I think she’s being wasted on the wing, sometimes forcing O’Reilly to the bench.

  5. Wambach is 5’11 which is 7 inches taller than the average American female. That would be like say an Ibrahimovic or Luca Toni who are both 6’5, 7 inches taller than the average American male. Thats pretty freaky. I’m sure 5’11 forward is taller than many female goalkeepers
