U.S. Women's National Team

USWNT off to winning start after rolling in 2013 opener

The Tom Sermanni era is officially in full swing, and we may have also gotten a glimpse of what could one day be the Christen Press era.

Press became just the third play to score two goals in their U.S. Women’s National Team debut (joining Cindy Parlow and Sherrill Kester) to help the U.S. post a 4-1 rout against Scotland in Jacksonville on Saturday.

The win was the first under new U.S. head coach Tom Sermanni, who takes over as full-time head coach after the departure of Pia Sundhage last year.

Shannon Boxx and Sydney Leroux provided the other goals to help the Americans extend their unbeaten streak to 24 matches (a 21-0-3 run).

Press wasn’t the only American to make their debut for the U.S. team. Midfielder Kristen Mewes and defender Julie Johnson also earned their first career caps.

The U.S. and Scotland will play again on Wednesday at LP Field in Nashville, Tennessee.

Here are the match highlights from Saturday’s U.S. victory:

What did you think of the match? See Press being a star? Think Sermanni will be able to live up to Sundhage’s high standards?

Good to see some new faces on the team. I hope we see Crystal Dunn get some time on Wednesday. And lets work on that midfield!

[btw, it should be Mewis and Johnston, not Mewes and Johnson]

I agree, nice to see Press and Dunn. I’m still trying to figure out why Ohai wasn’t invited to Sermanni’s initial camp.

If I have a beef with Pia Sundhage it was that she didn’t seem to give a crap about developing the next generation of American women so that we have a steady pipeline of talented players. She did well at playing existing, proven, talent, and I guess that should not be ignored.

Kudos to the new coach for trying out the “new stuff”.

Wow — my impression is precisely that Sundhage helped bring along young new talent. In particular she was constantly singing the praises of Tobin Heath as the future of the team and the program and if she didn’t rush into starting Morgan, well she did switch over to that and then pretty much got Leroux into the super-sub sort of role that Morgan was then vacating.

Dunno what her take on Press was, though of course we also have to see to what extent Press lives up to this very promising start…

Sermanni will more than live up to Pia’s standards, I predict, especially if we aren’t subjected to his singing.

Cool highlights. I can’t believe i just watched them. Box’s goal and the lone one from Scotland were nice.
