Americans Abroad: Weekend Preview

Only three points separate Maurice Edu and Bursaspor from third-place Fenerbahce, and they will have a golden chance to pull level with the Turkish heavyweights this weekend.

Currently sitting on 37 points and in fourth place of the Super Lig, Bursaspor will visit the 18-time Turkish champions on Sunday in one of Turkey’s marquee match-ups this weekend. While picking up a result in Istanbul will likely not be easy, a win for Edu and Bursaspor would put them even on points with Fenerbahce and bring them closer to a Champions League spot, so there is plenty to play for.

Another match with some intrigue will take place in the German Bundesliga, as Timmy Chandler and Michael Parkhurst could face off in a battle of U.S. Men’s National Team right backs. Parkhurst’s FC Augsburg host Chandler and Nurnberg, and both teams will be looking for three points so as to try and further themselves away from the drop zone.

If Tim Howard can heal up and be ready for this weekend, he, too, will be involved in a big game. Everton is set to host Wigan Athletic in a do-or-die FA Cup quarterfinals match, but Howard’s availability for the match still seems to be in question due to the back injury that forced him to miss the Toffees’ clash with Reading last weekend.

  1. Chandler, Gyau, and Wooten all started. Chandler went 90, Gyau went 85 (his sub scored the winning goal…), and Wooten went 73.

Parkhurst and Wood were unused subs.

    • St. Pauli was up 2-1 when Joe Gyau was subbed out in the 85th minute for veteran player Florian Bruns. Gyau got warm applause from the St. Pauli fans as he left the pitch. The ending of the game was wild, with St. Pauli striker Daniel Ginczek gettting a red card in the 87th minute and Regensburg getting the 2-2 equalizer in the 89th minute and Bruns getting the 3-2 winner in the 90th minute.

In the 66th minute, Gyau in St. Pauli’s half stole the ball from an opponent and made a nice forward pass into the Regensburg half of the field that helped set up the goal that put FCSP up 2-1. You could see Gyau’s confidence growing in the second half and the Regensburg defense was wary of his speed. He seems to have finally won the confidence of Coach Michael Frontzek and seems to have a good chance of getting his third start in a row next Friday at FC Union Berlin.

  2. Charlie Davies and Randers played against Sønderjyske tonight. Randers won 2-0 with Davies on the field. He didn’t score though.

  3. How are you watching AZ.?

ESPN puts two Dutch games on ESPN3 every weekend but AZ has not been featured for 2 months.

Who do they think USA fans want to see in the Dutch league?

How do we get them to out AZ in the rotation?

    • Legitimately? Eredivisie Live. I think they are running a 30 Euro package for the rest of the season.

ESPN has been broadcasting the Eredivisie in Spanish for quite some time. I imagine that the people who have been following Dutch football from before the time of Jozy follow the league, so they watch what is on the schedule.

With that said, it does seem odd that there aren’t more broadcasts of AZ in English. My guess is the matches scheduled has to do with the contract signed between ESPN and the Eredivisie.

  4. I hope that Bobby Wood, Andrew Wooten, and Ventura Alvarado start their games. Wood probably has a better chance than Wooten and Alvarado, but if all three start or get subbed on that would be great.

  5. One hazard of following Yanks Abroad is that you lose context of the whole team. I just found out that AZ is in the danger zone, despite Altidore’s great season. Perhaps a bid for Sean Johnson or Tally Hall is in order.

  6. Franco and/or Ives –

Herc Gomez tweeted that ESPN will be broadcasting Liga MX in English. Do y’all have any confirmation on this?

As to this weekend, I am very happy that AZ is playing on Saturday, and that Bursaspor are playing on Sunday, so there won’t be a conflict as to which team to watch.
