The Colorado Rapids just can’t catch a break.

With five starters on the mend already, the Rapids will have to add another to the injury list, as starting center back Diego Calderon will miss the next 4-5 months following successful knee surgery. The Ecuadorian slammed into a goalpost making a goal-line clearance during Colorado’s 1-0 loss to Los Angeles last Saturday, forcing him off in the 34th minute.

Calderon now joins captain Pablo Mastroeni, goalkeeper Matt Pickens, midfielders Jaime Castrillion and Martin Rivera, and forward Edson Buddle on the sidelines. The former LDU Quito player signed with the Rapids in January 2013.

Here are some more stories to keep you in the know around the league:

MOOR SUSPENDED ADDITIONAL MATCH

While the Rapids lost Mastroeni and Calderon to injury last Saturday in Los Angeles, they also lost veteran defender Drew Moor to a straight red card, following an elbow to Galaxy midfielder Marcelo Sarvas in the box.

The MLS Disciplinary Committee announced on Thursday that in addition to the automatic one-match suspension, Moor would have to serve another match on the sidelines, as well as being fined an undisclosed amount. The 29-year-old commented after the match, saying that he was disappointed in himself for his actions on the pitch.

The team depth of the Rapids will now be tested in their next two matches, hosting Portland and then facing Real Salt Lake in the Rocky Mountain Cup.

RED BULLS ACQUIRE AKPAN FOR DRAFT PICK

It looks like Red Bulls sporting director Andy Roxburgh and manager Mike Petke aren’t finished building their squad just yet.

Facing a shortage of forwards this weekend, and possibly bringing in further depth at the position in case of long-term injury, the New York Red Bulls have acquired Andre Akpan from the Colorado Rapids in exchange for a conditional draft pick in 2015.

The Grand Prarie, Texas native has been with Colorado ever since he was drafted in the second round of the 2010 MLS Superdraft. Akpan was part of the U.S. squad in the U-20 World Cup in 2007, and while at Harvard, he became the school’s all-time leading goal scorer, and 2009 Ivy League Player of the Year.
