Goalkeeper blunder dooms Rapids as FC Dallas win home opener

FC Dallas rode an early goalkeeper blunder by Colorado back-up netminder Stewart Ceus, and some stingy defending, to post a 1-0 victory over the Rapids in Saturday’s season opener at FC Dallas Stadium.

Ceus, playing in place of injured starter Matt Pickens, mis-judged a long David Ferreira pass, racing out to claim it before watching it bounce over his head and toward an open goal. FC Dallas’ Jackson was there to finish off the easy tap-in to put the Rapids in a hole just 11 minutes into the match.

The fluke goal was all FC Dallas needed on a night when the Rapids just couldn’t get much going in their attack. Newly-acquired FC Dallas goalkeeper Raul Fernandez made three saves on the night to record the shutout.

The Rapids finished the match with more possession and more shots on goal, but never truly threatened Fernandez.

Here are the match highlights:

What did you think of the match? Impressed with the Dallas defense? Think the Rapids are in for a long season, or just think they need Pickens back?

    • Yeah, Kenny was there. That’s about all that can be said of him on the night. Dallas’ attack looked clueless – FCD was really lucky to get the win. And Colorado wasn’t as toothless as this article makes them sound. They really threatened to get in behind the Dallas backline, especially in the first half. Maybe Fernandez only made a few saves, but he was extremely active early on. Also, Dillon Powers could have been Ives’ Rookie of the Week – I thought he looked very sharp.

  1. Good to see Pablo back for the Rapids. We looked much more dangerous than last year, but it will still be a long season, I think.

  2. FCD will need 2 more weeks to sort out this new formation, they looked very 2011-2012 ish yesterday. Also our GK makes me nervous but once he gets his communication down I think he could be very very good.
