Mid-Day Ticker: Liverpool’s Joe Allen out for season, Poyet in front for Reading job and more

Joe Allen of Liverpool looks dejected

By VINCE MADURI

Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen will miss the rest of the season due to an injury to his left shoulder, which the Welsh international is set to have surgery for on Thursday.

The 23-year-old has experienced a dip in form the last few weeks, ultimately leading to the decision to proceed with surgery.

Allen was acquired by Liverpool in the summer transfer window from Swansea City but has largely been in and out of the lineup since due to both injuries and poor form.  The midfielder has managed two goals in 37 appearances with the club this season.

Here are some more stories to get you through your Wednesday:

READING GIVEN PERMISSION TO SPEAK WITH BRIGHTON’S GUS POYET

Reading have been given permission by Brighton to speak with manager Gus Poyet as the Royals look to replace recently fired manager Brian McDermott.

Reading are tied for bottom of the Premier League and are threatened by the possibility of being relegated just a season after promotion to the top tier of English football.

Meanwhile, Brighton sit seventh in the Championship and sit just one point behind a playoff position.  The club also had some success in the F.A. Cup when Brighton upset Newcastle in the third round.

ENGLAND MAY USE MICHAEL CARRICK IN CENTRAL DEFENSE

England manager Roy Hodgson is considering using Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick at center back in the upcoming World Cup qualifier against San Marino Friday.

Carrick has played central defense for United on a few occasions this season, and England are in dire need of a bit of help at the position following several key injuries to United’s Phil Jones, Tottenham’s Michael Dawson and Everton’s Gary Cahill.

Hodgson is rumored to favor starting Manchester City’s Joleon Lescott and United’s Chris Smalling with Carrick in midfield, but will think about moving the midfielder back if San Marino prove difficult to break down.

NEW LEEDS UNITED OWNERS DECIDE TO SELL

Leeds United is on the market again, just three months after being purchased by Bahrain-based Gulf Financial House.

The new owners have given formal notice of negotiations to sell the club, which they had purchased from previous owners Ken Bates on December 21 of last year.

GFH announced they only bought the club for a “bargain purchase” and envision the club being sold in six month to a year’s time.

  2. I hate any player getting injured.

That being said, Allen has done nothing but hurt Liverpool this season. Rodgers has shown blind faith in the poor man’s Michael Carrick.
