This Weekend’s Soccer on TV

Christian Benteke of Aston Villa

By MICHAEL KLINE

This weekend gives Queens Park Rangers the opportunity to move up a couple places in the relegation zone, while Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Barcelona will all look to extend their tremendous leads atop their respective leagues.

Aston Villa will face a relegation battle for the second weekend in a row on Saturday, when they host Queens Park Rangers at Villa Park. Brad Guzan and the Villans climbed out of the relegation zone last week, but a loss to QPR

The Villans were able to move three points clear of the relegation zone last weekend after defeating Reading 2-1, but QPR will look to ride their own good form and attempt to win their third consecutive match for the first time this season. A win would move QPR up two spots in the table and within a point from exiting the relegation zone, something they’ve only managed to avoid once this season.

In Germany, Bayer Leverkusen will attempt the impossible when they welcome league-leaders Bayern Munich to the BayArena.

Leverkusen have already done what no other German club has been able to do so far this season, by beating Bayern the first time the two clubs met. Bayern has been in simply amazing form through their first 25 matches in the Bundesliga, and their 2-0 loss to Arsenal in the Champions League on Wednesday, a scoreline that hasn’t been seen at the Allianz Arena since Borussia Dortmund beat Bayern 2-0 in 2011, may serve as the perfect reminder to the German Giants that they aren’t quite invincible.

AC Milan will host Palermo at the San Siro on Sunday, and Milan will hope to push their collapse against Barcelona in the Champions League on Tuesday as far back in their minds as possible.

Their rebound-match couldn’t get any easier, however, as they face the worst team in Serie A. Palermo will head to Milan searching for their first win in league play since November of 2012, and just their fourth win overall this season. The Rosanero are faced with a difficult task on Sunday, but the possibility of catching Milan in a post-loss daze may provide the opportunity to turn their season around.

  1. I think MLS having a “rivalry week” screams minor league. It apperas that Garber and co. feel it is vital for the league to stress that hardcore rivalries exist between their frachises. I would prefer a normal schedule where the teams meet one another at any given time, not at a designated time period. It Reminds me so much of college basketball and that’s why I disagree with it for a professional sports league.

  2. The article should probably mention the NBC Sports “Whip Around” broadcast, It’s going to be in the studio between games with updates, cuts to live coverage, etc. It sounds like something we never had for US Soccer coverage before.

  3. Nice to see MLS sprinkled across national networks’ lineups this weekend. Vamos United!

Just wish FSC on sat would’ve flipped the Arsenal match to their ‘Plus’ station so I could watch Liverpool hopefully sustain their momentum from last week’s W against Spurs.
