This Weekend’s Soccer on TV

Javier Hernandez

The U.S. Men’s National Team’s showdown vs. Costa Rica will be front and center for all American fans tonight, but before that match, and throughout the weekend, there are soccer matches of all kinds to keep fans entertained and excited.

Honduras faces off against Mexico in a match with plenty of CONCACAF ramifications. If the Catrachos can beat Mexico, they will be in first place in the Hexagonal qualifying round, and they will send ‘El Tri’ into Tuesday’s showdown vs. the U.S. Men’s National Team with just one point.

In Europe, Fabio Capello has led Russia to the top of the group and an undefeated record so far in qualifying, and will attempt to remain perfect today when Russia visits Northern Ireland.

The World Champions will also take the pitch today when they face the bottom-dwellers of UEFA Group I, Finland. Spain sit atop of the group, but are tied on points with France, who welcomes Georgia to the Stade de France today. Both teams will hope to move clear of the other ahead of their qualifying rematch this Tuesday.

The leading goal scorers in CONMEBOL’s qualifying will be on display tomorrow, when Lionel Messi leads Argentina against Venezuela, and Paraguay attempts to defeat Luis Suarez and Uruguay.

There is a three-way tie for fourth place, and, despite Suarez’s seven qualifying goals, Uruguay remain last, on goal differential, out of the three countries. Uruguay have picked up just one point from their last four qualifying matches, but will look to reverse that poor form against Paraguay, who sit in last place of CONMEBOL’s qualifying.

  2. Honduras needs get this done so we can see some of the American fifth columnist (the Mexican press) can put some pressure on El Tri.

Then if my beloved Jamaica can win in panama and the yanks damage Costa Rica badly we may just have a help of Hex.
