Toronto FC sign Robert Earnshaw

BY DAN KARELL

On the eve of the start of the 2013 Major League Soccer season, Toronto FC have announced that they have signed forward Robert Earnshaw from Championship club Cardiff City. As per team and league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Earnshaw most recently played for Maccabi Tel Aviv in Israel, spending five months there on loan, scoring two goals in ten appearances, mostly coming off the bench.

The Welsh international turned professional in 1998 with Cardiff City, and went on to play for other English sides such as Norwich City, West Bromwich Albion, Derby County, and Nottingham Forest.

The 31-year-old also has earned 59 caps for Wales, scoring 16 goals. He will be officially added to the roster upon the completion of the player’s International Transfer Certificate.

Earnshaw becomes the first major signing for Toronto since Ryan Nelsen left Queens Park Rangers to take over as manager full-time on February 1.

What do you think of this signing? Do you see Earnshaw starting right away? Do you believe him and Danny Koevermans can produce a successful partnership?

  1. Big influx of former PL players at Toronto. Hogan Ephraim will surprise a few and Darel Russell is a cagey veteran. Looks like Ryan Nelson is putting his stamp on the team…

  2. He was a beast for West Brom when they first went up and survived the Premiership a handful + years ago. Not sure how that whole shooting a machine gun into the stands goal celebration will go in MLS stadiums under the current political climate on gun regulation, but it will be fun to watch if/when he puts it in the back of the net. I like all of these recognizable names coming to MLS. It may get more people to tune in and start to see and appreciate the unfamiliar players already in the league who are better than the names they already know.

  3. Not bad, how many MLS teams have over the average forwards,a number 10 and center back and goalkeeper…….. i say 4 to 8 teams in the league do. Galaxy have the whole package and now Seattle is trying to do that and Red Bull should have had a Galaxy team before them but you know Red Bull. In the coming years, MLS teams will have to do what Galaxy has been doing in the past 2 years and if they win MLS Cup this season, expect many teams to open their wallets and follow Galaxys foundation of Dps and local top talent. As for Seattle, i think they should get 3 dps at Galaxys level by next year in order to overcome the west and I see Galaxy getting Lampard, then in 2014 Ronaldinho, because Ronaldinho has said, he wants to stay in Brazil till 2014 world cup and then retire or have a new adventure which would be MLS or some Asian league. On the other hand, I see Red Bull getting Kaka or Drogba in 2014. Hopefully Chicago, San Jose, Rapids, Houston, Dallas, Skc will open their wallets in 2014 after the world cup because many top European and south american top talent will be looking at MLS, just like Kaka and Ronaldinho.

  4. Thought he would be a lot older than 31… He’s been around for a while. Not sure he’s the guy to help Toronto out of the basement.
