Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

For Herculez Gomez and Santos Laguna, this weekend could not have gone any better. Not only did they clinch a playoff spot with a 1-0 victory on Friday, but they did so against the team they will soon face in the CONCACAF Champions League final.

Gomez and Santos defeated Monterrey at home on Friday and that match gave them a taste of what is in store for them this upcoming Wednesday when they again host Los Rayados in the first leg of the CCL final. The win, which Gomez played 74 minutes in, is sure to inspire plenty of confidence in Los Guerreros, who are now assured of a place in the Liga MX postseason and just three points shy of league leaders Tigres UANL.

The game also marked the professional debut of Joaquin Alonso Hernandez, a 19-year-old midfielder who is originally from El Paso, Texas. Hernandez came off the bench for Monterrey in the 63rd minute and came close to finding an equalizer two minutes later with a potent shot that Santos goalkeeper Oswaldo Sanchez did well to save.

Clint Dempsey also had an eventful match, scoring the equalizer that inspired Tottenham to a 3-1 win over Manchester City on Sunday. Dempsey netted for the sixth time this season in Premiership play and 11th across all competitions when he stretched out to knock in a Gareth Bale cross at the far post in the 75th minute of a match that kept Spurs within two points of an automatic UEFA Champions League spot.

It was not all good news this weekend. Club Tijuana continued to struggle in Liga MX, failing to win for a seventh straight game in a 2-1 defeat to Morelia, and what made matters worse was that Joe Corona and Edgar Castillo were both sent off late in the Satuday match. Corona was ejected in the 89th minute with a red card while Castillo picked up his second yellow card in second-half stoppage time.

What do you think of these performances? Think Gomez and Santos’ win over Monterrey will be a big factor heading into the first leg of the CCL final on Wednesday? Surprised to see Corona and Castilla get sent off in one game?

  1. Sad that its over for Freddy. He plays for a team in Brazil that even Brazians don’t know and that’s not even on Brazilian TV.

  2. so what’s the story with JAB only playing a few? i’m assuming an injury but anyone know the details? get on it Biff! haha

    • I love Claudia Reyna but that is farcical… Reyna was a good player, quality player… Dempsey is a darn near a super star…

  3. Psyched that Adu got on the field. If he can earn a starting spot and make a difference in matches, he will surely get a call up for the Gold Cup. I would like nothing more than an Adu Renaissance.

  4. Out of that whole spill…..all I saw (and was looking for) was “Freddy Adu came off the bench”….perfect way to cap off the weekend.

  5. don’t know if anybody’s already said this, but if not, guess i’ll be the one: the defending on dempsey’s goal was absolutely atrocious.

    Reply
      • ha! i know that it always comes off as taking away from the goalscorer, and that’s certainly not my intent. just had to comment, because i still have no idea what that defender was thinking.

      • again, not trying to take away from dempsey’s finishing (and his positioning was perfect); just commenting on how awful that defending was.

now i see why nobody else bothered to say it.

      • You are joking aren’t you, Nate Dollars. No one else is saying it was bad defense because that simply is not the case. It was an exceptional offensive attack started with a perfect (and perfect is an understatement) cross from Gareth Bale, a man who is currently one of the three best soccer players on the planet. And on the receiving end was one of the top clutch players in the world, a guy named Clint Dempsey, who timed his run perfectly and in a must-win game came sliding in full speed and got the tap just right as he slides on the ground, a shot that his been flubbed thousands of times in the history of soccer.

No defense would have been able to stop that goal, which AVB after the game lauded as the goal that got the team fired up to go on in win a must win game and might be the game that gives Clint his dream of playing in the Champions League.

      • the problem is that people believe he is world class and start to call him the best Tottenham player

      • @louis z: Who’s saying Clint is the “greatest American player that ever lived”? We are simply happy and proud because Clint scored a great goal that turned the game around in a must-win game against a star-studded team that happens to be the reigning PL champs and also opened the door a bit wider for Tottenham to get a Champions League slot.

FYI: USMNT Captain Dempsey at the current time is America’s greatest soccer player bar none and can certainly be included as one of top players ever. And his career is not over yet. Who knows…

    • Even if that were true, so what? Are you saying that Spurs and Man City are now competing in Holland?

Should Clint have trapped the ball and said to the defender “dude, I know you messed up, I’ll give you a chance to make up for that and still beat you!”?

A striker’s job is largely about beating a defender to a spot and then making people like you write in and say ” wow what atrocious defending”.

That goal happened because Bale quickly hit the cross with his left foot and caught the defense a split second late. If Bale puts it on his right and crosses then the defense is ready.

Bale is not being called the second coming of Christiano Ronaldo for nothing. He and Clint beat the defense; no shame there.

      • It is a good thing Bale used his left foot, it is much better than his right. He is not the only great player to favor one foot, Bechanbauer for one. I don’t think Bale is as one-footed as Bechanbauer though.

    • lol, it’s funny coming back reading these comments. notice that i never said anything negative about dempsey (and even complimented him in follow-up comments), but people are jumping all over it like i was saying it shouldn’t even have counted.

  6. Good to see Adu get some minutes. I know he didn’t start but getting on the field is a step in the right direction.

  7. Brooks had a Ricardo Clark esq appearance today. Is he hurt too? Also i thought he was going to make his announcement on what country this past Friday. ESPN could not make Jim Grey available for him to announce he was taking his talents to South Beach?

    • His coach probably hates him, the fans are probably calling for him to be sold (even tho he’s on loan), he is just another American who dreamed two big and should probaby just come back to MLS cause he’s just not good enough for Europe.

      Reply
      • By all accounts, the fans like him fine.

He usually goes the full 90′ when fit, and he’s played in more positive results than negative ones, including a big win over Besiktas the other week.

I’m pretty sure its an injury.

      • *Sarcasm*

I’m making fun of the fact that so many people complain about Bradley and Dempsey. I think your right about the injured btw.

    • I remember a couple years back when Jozy played for the same team on loan and was playing consistently like Edu and then all of a sudden they weren’t dressing him. Just an observation, I don’t really know what to make of it.

      Reply
      • Edu is injured based on his recent instagram account. He posted a couple of photos showing him receiving treatment to his leg.

  8. Interesting to see Diskerud score his 2nd of the season. Looks like his club Rosenborg is off to great form. Perhaps they might win the title this year.

Hoping Josh Gatt leaves this summer for Holland or Belgium

      • He was good and one of the best players on the pitch. You haven’t watched him enough – he’s not as pretty s others

      • About 30 Americans Abroad didn’t play at all, 10 came off the bench. Out of about 60 total.

Dempsey had his moments, a few great passes and the professional finish. Doesn’t look like the singular threat that he was with Fulham, but it’s got a lot to do with the greatness that now surrounds him.

      • You can’t satisfy some. At Fulham, yes he scored more last year than he has at Spurs this year. But, how did Fulham do last year vs. Spurs this year? Why? Simple – at Fulham, Dempsey was THE offensive focal point. At Spurs, he’s AN offensive focal point … i.e., Fulham didn’t have personnel on the level of Bale, and Dafoe in their attack. And that’s why Spurs is doing better this year than Fulham did last, despite Dempsey’s “lack” of scoring.
