Americans Abroad: Weekend Preview

Clint Dempsey of Tottenham Hotspur

By FRANCO PANIZO

If you are in the mood to watch some mouth-watering matches, this weekend’s Americans Abroad action is perfect for you.

Several Americans will be involved in intriguing, high-profile matches this weekend, including Clint Dempsey. Dempsey and Tottenham will take on Manchester City on Sunday and a win for Spurs at White Hart Lane would be huge, as it could potentially move Tottenham into fourth place and give them the Premiership’s UEFA Champions League qualifiers spot ahead of Arsenal.

Another interesting game that will take place in England will go down on Monday. Brad Guzan is aiming to lead Aston Villa as they try and grab a result on the road against Manchester United, but the Red Devils will be keen on taking all three points so as to try and secure that the Premiership crown is theirs.

If that is not enough to satisfy your cravings, Saturday has a fixture worth watching. Jozy Altidore and AZ Alkmaar host third-placed PSV Eindhoven and the U.S. Men’s National Team striker will try to add to his impressive scoring total while trying to help lead AZ to victory.

  1. An Augsburg win and Hoffenheim loss this weekend would be just about the final nail in the coffin for Hoffenheim’s hopes of staying afloat in the 1. Bundesliga. Key game is Augsburg’s today, as Hoffenheim faces a very difficult task Saturday against a very good Bayer Leverkusen team fighting for the Bundesliga’s third automatic Champions League slot.

And that reminds me, a story in the UK press that AVB and Tottenham are looking for a left back to sign this summer. Wonder if Fabian Johnson would be on their short-list.

  2. Not sure whether this has been noted elsewhere, but it would seem that a half dozen or so Germany National Team members will be missing the June 2 friendly against the USMNT, as FC Bayern plays Stuttgart June 1 in the DFB Pokal Final.

    • Also if dortmund make the champions league final their players won’t be there for the game as well, it’s going to be a very different starting 11 for germany with no neuer, badstuber, lahm, schweinsteiger and gomez, as well as possibly no hummels, gotze and reus.Bradley will not be in at least the belgium game due to the copa italia final, might also miss the germany game.

      • hmmm. I had not thought of that. And if not Dortmund, then Real Madrid in the CL final with with Ozil and Khedira. But the Champions League final is May 25, a full eight days before the June 2 USMTN friendly so that leaves the door open for Dortmund or Madrid players to be able to show up. But come to think of it, Jogi Low might opt to let them stay in Europe because Germany is playing Ecuador May 29 in Florida and he will need to have a roster already in place for that game.

As for Bayern, it is not just the players you mentioned above, but also Toni Kroos, Jerome Boateng, and Thomas Muller, and Dortmund you would need to add Marcel Schmelzer and Ilkay Gundogan.

      • The team is playing and Adu is on the roster for this Sunday.
