On the eve of the latest installment of the D.C. United-New York Red Bulls rivalry The SBI Show talks to a player who was a key figure in the series in the past, a New Jersey native who enjoyed his share of success against his hometown team.

Alecko Eskandarian enjoyed a very successful career before concussions forced him to step away from the game at an early age. The former MLS No. 1 overall draft pick and MLS Cup Final MVP has made the transition to a coaching career, and is now an assistant coach with the New York Cosmos, the same club his father Andranik played for back in the 1970s in the old NASL.

Eskandarian joins us on Episode 24 of The SBI Podcast, and he discusses everything from the 2004 MLS Cup-winning D.C. United team to the D.C.-Red Bulls rivalry, to his struggles with concussions and even his brief foray into the world of reality television.

Co-host Garrett Cleverly and I discuss the recent exit from the CONCACAF Champions League by MLS teams, the performances of Americans Abroad like Clint Dempsey, and we also take a look at the top match-ups in MLS Week Five.

  1. I’m not sure about the logic in dismissing the salary cap. I agree it is not the only reason. I agree youth development is more important. I also don’t think MLS should increase the cap just to try and win the CCL.

But I think this is overstated in the podcast. The salary cap is NOT the reason why Martins was hurt, true. But it IS the reason Seattle doesn’t have 2 Martins-type players and was therefore so vulnerable to injury to him.

    • Clyde, you say the cap is why Seattle doesn’t have two Martins-type players. Santos doesn’t have two Darwin Quinteros and Monterrey doesn’t have two Humberto Suazos. If Monterrey lost Suazo and DeNigris to injury they would NOT have two similar players ready to replace them. That’s fallacy.

  2. good interview, i wanted to hear a bit more about what is going on with the Cosmo’s… seems like they have 10 players, a full coaching set up and are starting in August..?

re. MacInerney – Chicaro comparison; they look similar, play to similar strengths but they arn’t and probably won’t be even close to similar levels for a while!

    • That was “good” Kid Cudi before he came out with “Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager”. Horrible album.

      • Bite your tongue Garrett! Man on the Moon II was a phenomenal project. You have to approach it with an open mind and be receptive to the ideas, stories and imagery Cudder wants to convey. I honestly think you’re the first person I’ve ever heard not care for it.
