The New York Red Bulls are going to have to find a way to get by without their most consistent and most influential midfielder after word emerged that Dax McCarty looks set to miss the next two weeks with a thing injury.

“Dax will be out, the word right now, two weeks,” Petke told MLSSoccer.com after Thursday’s practice. “He has a slight tear in his quad. It’s a small little tear, so [the medical staff] are only saying two to two-and-a-half weeks.”

McCarty’s absence comes with the Red Bulls already missing Brazilian midfielder Juninho, who is serving the second match of his suspension for kicking a ball at Sporting Kansas City goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen. Both players will miss Saturday’s match at Toronto FC, while McCarty also looks set to miss the Red Bulls visit to the Columbus Crew on May 4th.

The Red Bulls actually have an assortment of options in central midfielders, notably converted wingers Johnny Steele and Eric Alexander, who both have been deputized into wide midfield roles to start the season.

If Petke turns to a central midfield tandem of Tim Cahill and Johnny Steele, he could give winger Lloyd Sam his first start of the season.

What do you think of this development? See the Red Bulls winning without McCarty? Who would you start in midfield with McCarty sidelined?

  1. Bad week for the McCarty boys.
Dax’s younger brother, who played one season for the Galaxy, just tore his acl during a pickup game in Orlando.
