When the 2013 season began, it was believed that Robbie Keane would be the goal-scoring machine who would lead the Los Angeles Galaxy while Landon Donovan was away on his sabbatical.

It hasn’t been Keane leading the attack though. It has been Mike Magee, who has amassed a league-leading five goals through the first month of the 2013 MLS season to not only help the Galaxy be the only unbeaten team in Major League Soccer, but also to earn SBI MLS Player of the Month honors.

Magee beat out a field of candidates that included Montreal midfielder Patrice Bernier, FC Dallas playmaker David Ferreira and Chivas USA goalkeeper Dan Kennedy.

A key figure in the past two MLS Cup-winning sides with the Galaxy, Magee has started to garner calls for a U.S. Men’s National Team look thanks to his stellar goal-scoring record, and he has also helped the Galaxy reach the semifinals of the CONCACAF Champions League.

What do you think of Magee’s month of March? Which MLS player garnered your vote for Player of the Month for March?

  1. he’s been doing this for two seasons already. he’s excellent in tight spaces, very smart player, and now has stepped up further because of LD being out, beckham gone, Robbie on Int’l duty, etc.

love guys who step up when presented opportunties

and he’s not international quality why? I’m willing to bet those of you so sure of that thought have barely seen him play these last 2.5 years

  2. Magee>>>>Messi

Seriously tho, I love having Magee on the Galaxy and I always have full faith he will score for us when needed. Clutch.

  3. If Magee is still riding his hot streak at the end of May, I’d like to see him get a call up for the Belgium friendly. Let’s not fool ourselves into thinking he’s WCQ or Gold Cup quality, but surely he’s as deserving as Wondo was when he got called in. There’s literally no risk in calling him up for a friendly. Best case scenario, the USMNT deepens its pool. Worst case, he flops and goes back to being an MLS wonder.

  4. His start reminds me of Edson Buddle in 2010. He rode his hot streak to a spot on the World Cup roster. Klinsmann should consider any player in exceptional form. But as for Magee, is he just a “product of the system”?

    • No. Magee’s two big strengths are his off-the-ball movement and his ability to create a shot from nothing. That’s a rare skill set among American players. Almost every foreign player the Galaxy brought in over the last several years has talked about how intelligently Magee plays. Robbie Keane suggested during the offseason that Magee is a DP-level player and expressed surprise that he was uncapped.

  5. (1) Troy Perkins; (2) Mike Magee; (3) Graham Zusi; (4) Marco Di Vaio; (5) Michael Gspurning.

Gspurning would be higher if you count CCL.

  6. He was great in Silver Linings Playbook as well.

Kidding aside, Magee has been on fire, but anyone calling for him in a national team shirt should stop. He is an impact player in MLS, but he is not international caliber. Even Wondo, the MLS-leading scorer for several years, failed to make an impact for the USMNT. I wouldn’t mind seeing Magee in camp for the Gold Cup, but he is so buried on the depth chart for the full squad.
