Liga MX Weekend Preview: Santos face Tijuana, America battle Puebla; and more

If you were under the impression that defending Liga MX champion Club Tijuana were enjoying another good season, you couldn’t really be blamed. The Xolos played extremely well in Copa Libertadores, advancing to the Round of 16 out of a group that they were expected to be overwhelmed by.

Not all has been positive for Club Tijuana though. The month of March was a rough one in Liga MX play, with the defending champs finishing winless with just one point from four matches. That slump has caused the Xolos to slide all the way to ninth place in the league standings, thus putting a serious dent into their chances of pulling off a repeat in the Clausura campaign.

Manager Antonio Mohamed responded by resting starters for last week’s Copa Libertadores draw vs. San Jose of Bolivia, a move made in order to give the Xolos rest heading into Saturday’s showdown vs. Santos Laguna, a team that could be vulnerable after having to play a mid-week CONCACAF Champions League match (a 1-0 win vs. Seattle).

March was a much better month for the Guerreros. They finished 3-1, and only a stoppage time own goal in last week’s draw vs. Queretaro kept them from a perfect month. That strong rally helped Santos Laguna climb all the way to fourth place in Liga MX, putting them in prime position to challenge for the title.

Club Tijuana-Santos Laguna isn’t the only clash worth keeping an eye on this weekend in Mexico. Club America is still within striking distance of first-place UANL Tigres and a win vs. Puebla could help push them closer to first place. DaMarcus Beasley,  Michael Orosco Fiscal and Puebla are currently fifth from bottom in Liga MX, but they are actually just three points from a valuable Top Eight place.

  1. Midnight- Galavision- Club Tijuana vs. Santos Laguna

Is that correct? The game really begins at midnight ET? Or does it begin at noon ET?

    • Nice, reminds me of those midnight games in Spain. This is probably because of the midweek games they had, more so for Xolos who flew down to Bolivia.

    • Okay, I see that game starts today at 10 pm local time. Was confused because G.com has the game listed as being played Sunday at 12 a.m.

  2. If Liga MX had a subscription service like MLS Live or Direct Kick, I would definitely jump on that! Very entertaining league, and with numerous Americans to follow/root for, that would be icing on the cake. Alas they don’t, and I don’t have those channels. Too bad.

    • I wouldnt because im not mexican

      Every liga mx game

      *10 dives/flops or more
      * goal keeper wasting time from minimal contact rolling on the ground
      * never a goal scored from outside the box

      • Interesting perspective. I’m not English, or Italian or German or Spanish or Mexican, but I watch all of these leagues when available. I love the game and my desire to watch it played is completely independent of which country this takes place in. Lots of good soccer played in the Mx. Living in SoCal, I can find a greater variety of Mx league games at no extra charge on local Spanish channels than I can MLS. Looking forward to Santos v Xolos and seeing Herc, Corona and Castillo… maybe Garza go at it. Two good clubs.

      • I take it you’re American weaksauce. So that would mean you only watch mls…Really?…Wow! Such a negative take on a pretty damn good league. Your opinion, I get it
