SBI Rookie of the Week: Deshorn Brown

The Colorado Rapids are enjoying surprising run of success in recent weeks and a major reason for it is a youth movement led by the team’s strong rookie class.

Dillon Powers won consecutive SBI MLS Rookie of the Week honors recently and now teammate Deshorn Brown has kept the streak going for the Rapids after his goal helped Colorado beat Chivas USA. Brown’s overall performance last Saturday, which included him drawing and converting a penalty kick, made him the easy pick for SBI MLS Rookie of the Week.

The No. 5 overall pick in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft recorded seven shots against the Goats before being substituted in the 87th minute.

Brown beat out fellow teammate Dillon Powers, Seattle fullback DeAndre Yedlin, New England fullback Andrew Farrell and Los Angeles Galaxy defender Greg Cochrane for this week’s honor.

What did you think of Brown’s performance vs. Chivas USA? What rookie impressed you in MLS this past weekend?

    • Farrell will be good when he learns not to take on three players and turn the ball over every time it is played to him.

  1. Man, there are some good young players coming into MLS again this year.
Next time I hear someone saying this is a down year for newcomers. I am throwing the challange flag.

Every time Yedlin gets the ball everyone holds their breathe waiting for awesomeness that hasn’t even reached full potential, with a little bit of rookie throw in to keep you on your toes.

  2. Brown seems to keep getting praise despite not scoring from the run of play yet this season. Guess I need to watch a few match replays.

    • I don’t really want to be the “I correct people on the Internet” guy but…. Brown’s first MLS goal was in the run of the play against RSL. Dude does need to convert more of his chances, though. He’s leading the league in shots.

  3. I can understand Deshorn Brown being the rookie of the week but in the list of runners-up you didn’t include Olmes Garcia? He was subbed on in the 60th minute and completely changed the complexion of the match and even scored what should probably be the goal of the week. If it wasn’t for a bogus handball call on a falling Borchers, his strike would have been the game-winner. I just wanted to make sure that he was highlighted for his excellent outing.

    • A rookie is someone who has never played as a pro before. Garcia came over from Colombia on a sizable fee. Though he’s not a DP, which I originally thought, he most certainly isn’t a rookie.
