What began as an encouraging start to the 2013 season has turned into a truly impressive run for the Portland Timbers after a statement victory on the road against Sporting Kansas City.

The Timbers went on the road on Saturday and took down Sporting Kansas City, 3-2, earning Caleb Porters’ squad SBI MLS Team of the Week honors.

Ryan Johnson, Darlington Nagbe, and Rodney Wallace all scored for the Timbers while goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts made a number of terrific saves to preserve the win.

The Timbers beat out the New York Red Bulls, Los Angeles Galaxy and New England Revolution for this week’s honors.

What did you make of Portland’s performance? Which MLS team impressed you the most during Week Nine?

  1. I was watching the latest episode of Grimm on NBC… and the main characters were watching a Portland Timbers game. One of the characters was wearing a Timbers jersey and they were actually talking about the game like fans. Nice job NBC!

  2. I love watching Portland play. If nothing else, they TRY to play the game the way many of us would like to see the game played. It’s remarkable how much difference a new manager can truly make. His acumen, his plan and his ability to communicate this plan to his players has done remarkable things for this team. This is not a false “confidence” that is talked about many a time. The confidence we’re seeing is from believing in the manager, the system, the plan, and the players… it’s cool to see.

Is it too early to begin asking for Darlington Nagbe to be nationalized and capped? i’d love to have Klinsman see him up close in a camp (perhaps for the Gold Cup). I really think he’s on another level than many players in MLS… and i think he’s the type of player Klinsman would LOVE.

    • They didn’t exactly “handle” RSL. They scored two early goals and RSL controlled the rest of the game and had a hot goalie deny them several times. Oh, and BTW, RSL has a losing record.
