Tuesday Kickoff: Rooney linked again with PSG; Aguero escapes FA action; and more

With new rumors of a move by Manchester United for Atletico Madrid forward Radamel Falcao Garcia, fresh links between Wayne Rooney and Paris Saint-Germain have been renewed.

A former PSG sports advisor has said that a transfer of Rooney to PSG is a “done deal,” though Rooney is reportedly hoping to stay in Manchester, and potentially negotiate his contract with the club. PSG Sporting Director Leonardo has refuted any claims of an offer for Rooney, but has stated that he is interested in making big signings this summer.

The 27-year-old Englishman has made 34 appearances and scored 16 goals in all competitions this season, much lower than last season’s career high of 34 goals.

Here are some more stories to get your Tuesday started:

Manchester City forward Sergio Aguero has evaded action from the FA after his two-footed tackle on Chelsea defender David Luiz during the Manchester side’s 2-1 win on Sunday in the FA Cup.

In the 81st minute of the match, Aguero made a strong challenge on Luiz, resulting in a free kick from referee Chris Foy, though video replays show that maybe a card should have been shown. However, as long as the referee saw the incident, the FA has no jurisdiction to issue retrospective punishment.

Luiz said after the match that he wanted Aguero to apologize for the tackle, though the Brazilian central defender said that he forgave the Argentine forward after the match.

Chelsea FC have yet to pick a manager for next season, but they’re already closing in on a new signing for the squad.

According to a report from One World Sports, Chelsea are close to signing winger Andre Schürrle from German club Bayer Leverkusen. Leverkusen are set to ask for upwards of €20 million plus Chelsea property Kevin De Brunye, who is currently on loan at Werder Bremen.

On Tuesday, German publication Die Welt reported that representatives from Leverkusen are set to travel to London later this week to meet with Chelsea officials to finalize a transfer fee. According to the report, Chelsea have already agreed a five-year-contract with the German international.

The 22-year-old Schürrle has collected 22 caps with the German National Team in his career, and this season has scored 12 goals in 38 matches across all competitions for Leverkusen.

Jose Manuel “Chepo” de la Torre has called up 20 domestic players to the Mexico National Team for Wednesday’s friendly match against Peru in San Francisco, California. None of the foreign players were called up because the match is not being played on a FIFA date.

Thirteen players on the squad have ten or less caps for Mexico as they look to get over their most recent draw, 0-0 against the United States on March 26. Though there is certainly inexperience in the side, four players including Gerardo Torrado and Francisco Javier Rodriguez have more than 50 caps during their long careers.

El Tri has arrived in San Francisco already ahead of the match away from the fans, where they’ll train in Candlestick Park on Tuesday afternoon. Peru has called up 18-year-old Real Madrid youth player Christian Benavente for the match, where he could make his full debut for La Blanquirroja.

What do you make of these reports? Do you see Rooney leaving United? Do you believe that Aguero should have faced punishment? Do feel that Schürrle is a good buy for Chelsea?

Regarding Aguero, it was interesting to watch that the only chippiness on the field Sunday was between the Argentinians of City and the Brazilians of Chelsea. Pretty funny actually. The rest of the players went hard but it was all done without much rancor.

    Haha, love it.

Chelsea is signing players without having a coach. THIS IS WHY YOUR TEAM GETS BLOWN UP EVERY FORTNIGHT.

Chelsea seemed to do OK last year with an interim manager. I mean only the Champions League and FA Cup double.

      • Travis

I seem to remember them getting destroyed by Atletico back in August who were the other champions of europe.

      • Mig

True enough. Then again, the Champions League is considered by most, including the World Club Championship, to yield the Champ of Europe.

But in that preseason event, they did get thrashed.

      • Nate Dollars

i don’t think anyone considers the winner of the europa league to be ‘champions of europe’.

Rooney leaving united? No way! United buying falcao? No way! Put the 2 rumors together – Its possible.

What does it mean they sent a payment to Athletico? Would that go towards a transfer fee or what?
