Americans Abroad: Weekend Rewind

Steve Cherundolo Hannover (Kicker)

By FRANCO PANIZO

Steve Cherundolo may be known as the Mayor of Hannover, but he now holds another distinct title for his club: all-time leader in Bundesliga appearances.

Cherundolo set the Hannover 96 record for most league matches played in on Saturday, as he took part in his 299th game for the club. Earning the milestone that signifies his longevity and consistency since joining Hannover in 1999 may have been a proud moment for Cherundolo but the result of the game was one to forget, as Hannover suffered a 3-1 loss to Bayer Leverkusen.

Alfredo Morales is another player who enjoyed a memorable weekend. Celebrating his 23rd birthday on Sunday, Morales made the day even more special by scoring the first goal of his professional career in Hertha Berlin’s 2-1 win over FC Cologne. The goal was not only the eventual winner in the match, but it also assured that promotion-bound Hertha Berlin would finish their impressive season as 2. Bundesliga champions.

Clint Dempsey also made an impact for his respective team, scoring a goal and assisting on another in Tottenham’s 2-1 come-from-behind win over Stoke City on Sunday. Dempsey first pulled Spurs level in the game with a great left-footed strike from distance before setting up Emmanuel Adebayor’s winner seven minutes before the final whistle. Dempsey’s goal gave him seven in league play and 12 across all competitions this season, and also helped keep Tottenham’s hopes of earning a UEFA Champions League spot alive.

  1. For what it is worth boca seems to be playing full 90’s every week now for a while now. The spanish second div isnt too bad either especially madrid and barcalona’s b teams. Any chance of a USNT comeback? Or has omar/besler/cameron blown past him? Regardless good development for him, but i hope he is back in MLS soon. Chicago, Chivas, Colorado, Portland, Seattle would all be great fits for him

    • Yes that would really make MLS an even better league! Even if the guys in the bundesliga and epl stayed and all the ligamx, scandinavians, div2 players returned it would be a huge plus. Hopefully we see some signage this summer.

  2. on tottenham’s second goal, did anyone think it should have been offside?

i know the ball never got to the player who was in an offside position, but it’s obviously who bale was aiming for, so wouldn’t he technically considered to be in play?

  3. Anyone see the AV game? Howed Lichaj play? With Chandler currently sidelined with injury and Parkhurst still not seeing time with his club…maybe he gets called in as Dolo’s backup.
Will be interesting to see who gets the call in the next couple weeks….really looking forward to the upcoming games.

    • depends on who you ask. i didn’t think he did too badly, although he was at fault on the winning goal. chelsea started out by purposefully targeting him, and then moved away as he was defending well.

probably depends on your expectations–mine were low. check out saturday’s running commentary to see other opinions.

      • Disagree with you, Nate Dollars. I think even with moderate expectations for Lichaj it can be said that Lichaj had a solid performance. Let’s not forget that Chelsea is a great team chock full of world class players and Lichaj is surrounded by a weak defensive team that is still fighting relegation (if Wigan beats Arsenal). Perhaps Lichaj could have covered differently on the winning goal, but that might have opened up other attacking options. And Lichaj did a great job of denying the speedy Hazard a third goal when Hazard beat the off-side almost at midfield and Lichaj raced back keeping pace with him and avoiding a foul and denied him the goal. I would be happy to see Lichaj finally called up by Klinsmann for a tryout.

In my mind, the loser of this game Benteke for that vicious elbow that earned him a yellow and the studs up jab that ended in red.

    • I thought Lichaj looked pretty good for someone who a) hasn’t played a lot lately, and b) was marking a world-class player in Hazard. He got beat on the winning goal, but as the ESPN broadcasters said during the replays, not a lot of people can stick with Hazard. I thought he defended well and got forward a few times to deliver some good crosses, including one that was VERY nearly an own goal. I’d give him a 5 out of 10. Some might say 4 or 6. They really had this game in the bag until Benteke got his 2nd yellow.

On another note, another strong performance by Guzan, but holy crap his distribution is horrible!

    • don’t believe he’s injured, and if they’re losing 7-3 (is that correct?), i don’t think a player with his attacking abilities is what they’re missing right now.

    • Brazilian clubs are in state championships. The Serie season starts in 2 weeks. We should know more then whether Adu fits in to Bahias plans.

    • Saw the last 40 minutes of Milan-Roma game and, gotta say, Mikey Bradley was impressive as defensive midfielder with a few runs toward the box. Did not see one bad pass from him and defensively was maybe the strongest I have ever seen him.

If Bradley and Jones can put their silly little competitive spats behind them and truly join hands and work together for the common cause as dual Sixes or Six-Eight or whatever you want to call it and taking turns in joining the attack, then we have the potential to have an awesome backbone to the midfield, providing cover for the CBs and allowing our fullbacks to freely move forward in attack.

And, speaking of attack, when are we going to see Klinsmann develop that part of the USMNT strategy? Any guesses? Isn’t it about time?

  4. What is going to happen with our Hoffenheim players when the team is relegated? Also, what will happen to Bocanegra if Racing Santander is relegated to the 3rd division? Can he come back to MLS now?

  5. Dempsey was awesome today. With Dembele and Lennon still not quite at full fitness and Huddlestone not playing well for a couple of games in a row now, they really needed Dempsey to step up, and he did. Great all around game.
