Second-half tallies lead Earthquakes to comeback victory over TFC

Last season’s Most Valuable Player Chris Wondolowski put together the kind of performance that proves his worth as a designated player.

Wondolowski assisted on one and scored the game-winner as the San Jose Earthquakes came back from one goal down to defeat Toronto FC, 2-1, on Wednesday night at Buck Shaw Stadium. Rookie Adam Jahn scored the game tying goal for the Earthquakes after going down early to a TFC goal from Justin Braun.

Braun gave the visitors some early hope when he finished past Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch from close range in the 13th minute to give TFC the lead. Adam Jahn stepped up when needed just three minutes into the second half, taking a pass from Wondolowski in the box before finishing past TFC goalkeeper Joe Bendik with his left foot to tie the match.

In the 81st minute, the Earthquakes found a winner, as new signing Walter Martinez flicked a Marvin Chavez corner kick towards Wondolowski in the box, and in true goal-scorer fashion, used his thigh to direct the ball into the net, giving the hosts the lead and eventually the win.

Here are the match highlights (after the jump):

  1. I dunno how it is at other stadiums as the game gets old, but there is this incredible and real excitement (tension? anguish?) and now expectation that the Quakes will score late. Everybody- including the team- is surprised now when it doesnt happen. Buck Shaw is a s**tty little stadium but when the crowd gets on its feet and it gets loud nobody cares.

  2. The Quakes now have 3 Honduran internationals on the team, all quality players. It’s good to see the team finally win one after going down in each of there last couple of games. They have been playing well, just not getting the goals. Anyone know when Lenhart and Gordon will be back? I think their suspensions end in another game or so. But Jahn should keep his starting spot in my opinion. He is producing.

    • New Quakes motto: Making CONCACAF stronger, one Honduran national at a time…..

Seriously, I appreciate these guys, but we’re making things tough on the USMNT by giving three Honduran national team players a means to play together consistently, good coaching, high level of competition. No matter – the USMNT will need to get better anyway to progress far in the World Cup competition.

      • Except that we sought out these players, because they’re already good.

I love the USMNT as much as the next fan, maybe even more, but ffs, some of you guys let your nationalism get in the way of… well, a lot.

    • Gordon should be back on Saturday, and he’ll probably see the field. I think Lenny is suspended for one more, not certain.

That said, I want the “Bash Bros” on a short leash. Jahn is scoring, should keep the starting spot. The Other Guys are playing like idiots.

I also think Martinez took Baca’s spot last night. And aside from Salinas’ first touch, everything else looks pretty good. Go Quakes.

      • I agree and I hate to say it but the elbow from Chavez will be at least 1 game suspension.
