It is that time again. Time to talk all things soccer in the latest SBI Live Q&A.

Today’s major announcement of the 20th MLS team being New York City FC has sent major shockwaves through the American soccer community and is raising plenty of questions about how it will affect the league and current New York-area club the New York Red Bulls.

There is more to talk about than just NYC FC though. With the U.S. Men’s National Team prepping for the busiest time of the year, we have a bunch to discuss on that front as well. Then of course there is the current MLS season.

Get your questions ready and send them my way and I will try to answer/discuss as many of them as I can over the next few hours.

  1. From the polls, it looks as if folks want more Live Q&A as well as more Old School Q&A. (Wasn’t the one prior to this one about five weeks back? ‘Cause that is too long.) Perhaps one way to get more of them out would be to allow your beat writers to moderate some of those discussions, especially the Old School ones that don’t require “Cover it Live” for which, I gather, there is some expense concerned. . Example: “This week’s Old School Q&A will focus on the Portland Timbers in particular and MLS in general, so send your questions in to ______, who will post answers in a few days.”

Loyal readers all knows that Ives’s is the main voice at Soccer by Ives, sensibly enough, but should it be the only voice? Isn’t there some value in encouraging a proliferation of soccer voices? These discussions are more akin to editorials or newspaper columns than to gameday journalism, so letting some of the beat writers branch into this area as well could force them to think about their jobs in new (and hopefully interesting!) ways. Moreover, the beat writers should have increased insight into their local teams. Might sacrifice something in the breadth of the discussion as compared to Ives, whose “beat” spans the continent, but more frequent “Cover Its,” even if shorter on specific topics, isn’t a bad idea in my book. And spreading the labor around can serve the readership without adding to Ives’s already heavy workload.

So that’s my suggestion for improving the site.

  2. I agree with the moderation policy if not always the execution. There has to be some moderation or else the board will inevitably devolve into bigsoccer madness where you can’t actually discuss anything intelligibly.

  3. Interesting. I’ve actually been very impressed by Jack-Mac’s leaping ability and body control on balls in the air (for a smaller guy). That was one of the reasons why I thought he was very Twellmanesque. I guess it was just a small sample and he’s not all that good in the air?
