The 16 American-based Major League Soccer teams learned their potential opponents when they all kick off U.S. Open Cup action in the third round of the competition, which is celebrating its 100th year.

The first round of the tournament began on Tuesday, and U.S. Soccer announced the second round match-ups as well as the pairings for the third round on Wednesday.

Sporting Kansas City will begin defense of their U.S. Open Cup title on May 28th at Sporting Park against one of three possible teams. The Des Moine Menace of the PDL host the NPSL Madison 56ers tonight in the final first-round match-up of the tournament, with the winner taking on the NASL’s Minnesota United for a chance to be Sporting KC’s first U.S. Open Cup opponent.

The Los Angeles Galaxy will be on the road in North Carolina on May 29th to take on the winner of the second-round match-up between the Carolina Railhawks of the NASL and the Carolina Dynamo of the PDL.

  1. Good to see the Galaxy coming to NC for the second year in a row. Hopefully, they’ll have a second half meltdown against the Railhawks like they did last year.

  2. Isn’t Harrisburg the team that knocked RBNY out of the competition last year?

I hear they’re bringing Backe back just for this match because he loves the Cup so much.

    • Agreed… the Dynamo need to teach them a lesson after laying an egg last year.

That said, kinda strange that SA gets the rematch again.
