Theo Walcott of Arsenal celebrates scoring to make it 5-6

By MICHAEL KLINE

The Barclays Premier League comes to a close this weekend, with a full slate of entertaining matches highlighting your Sunday morning.

Tottenham and Arsenal will take center stage on Sunday, with massive Champions League implications on the line.

Arsenal will visit St. James’ Park to face Newcastle, in a must-win situation. The Gunners control their own fate and the scenario couldn’t be more straightforward: win and they are in the Champions League. Their opponents Newcastle are in atrocious form at the moment, with their only win in their last five matches coming against the league’s worst club Queens Park Rangers.

Tottenham will play host to Paolo Di Canio and Sunderland on Sunday morning, with three points being the only objective for the match.

The Spurs’ fate rests in the hands of Newcastle United, who has to either beat or draw with Arsenal for Andre Villas-Boas and co. to have a shot at the Champions League. An Arsenal draw or loss and a Tottenham victory will see the Spurs move into the last Champions League place in England.

Here is a rundown of This Weekend’s Soccer on TV:

  1. NBC paying as much as they did for the rights is in a way due to FSC showing that there is a demand for coverage in the US. While I haven’t been the biggest fan of FSC over the years, I can remember having to buy pay per view games on Saturday and Sunday 7 years ago. So I am thankful for Fox sports world/fox soccer channel/whatever it will become for providing me with premier league coverage because no one else was doing that before them in this country.

  2. Arriba el Atletico!
So happy for Diego Simeone and his boys.

  3. ATLETI! ATLETI! ATLETI!!!!!

The better managed team won. They kept it together, took advantage of their chances, and yes, the ball bounced their way.

Buh-bye, oh Special One. Maybe you can handle the EPL, but you cannot win in Spain.

      • I get you’re stoked by your club’s victory but the Special One is a hundred times the manager of anyone who has been or ever will be at Athletico.

  4. The Spanish league is decided already, so ESPN plays a game on their main channel.
Man I do not get that station.

Did NBC think MLS was on break ? Seattle-Dallas in Seattle ? come on…

  5. Can anybody tell me if foxsoccer is still going to exist next year or is foxsports1 taking over since fox soccer seems a silly name for a channel that has no soccer?

    • Fox Soccer ends in August, according to an article I read sometime ago in the New York Times. My question is if Fox Soccer News will continue on Fox Sports 1.

    • Report from March 28 has Fox closing Fox Soccer and Fox Soccer Plus networks permanently. They will be launching a new network, Fox Plus 1. No info yet as to how much soccer this network will carry. Also, ESPN has lost it’s EPL contract for next year, and will only cover USMNT home games.

This will leave the lion’s share of soccer broadcasting next year to NBC Networks and, believe it or not, Al Jazeera. Yes, that’s right. Al-Jazeera-owned BeIn Sport, which only launched a year ago, is poised to become the second biggest soccer network in the USA. Very surprising this has made such little news in the US.

      • Fox Sports 1 will supposedly replace Speed Channel. Fox Sports 2 is rumored to replace Fuel-TV. Fox Soccer is said to be turning into an entertainment network called FXX

    • Last I read, Foxsports 1 is set to launch on Sat. Aug. 17 and among the “opening day” broadcasts include a NASCAR Truck Series Race and an live UFC event that evening. The channel will play Champions League and FA cup matches but beginning in the fall it will include college football and college basketball in the winter. For us diehard soccer fans, it will become increasingly unlikely that we will be able to tune in at midnight on any given night and catch a replay of a soccer game we missed during the week, which was one of the perks of Fox Soccer. I would love to see the Bundesliga, Mexican league, Japanese or Russian leagues get picked up on this channel, but then again, it would be extremely frustrating knowing that there are Bundesliga games or Mexican league games occurring and the channel is showing an Eastern Michigan v. Western Michigan football game instead.

  6. FOX laying down in the face of NBC’s soccer juggernaut. Cannot wait for every EPL game to be televised – TAKE THAT C-SPAN, NOW YOU ARE USEFUL.

  7. Last year, Fox had all the games on at once on their various channels. This year, most are on FoxSoccer2Go.com.

    Way to give up, Fox.

    • I imagine it’s part to do with losing EPL broadcasting rights to NBC, but more to do with Survival Sunday becoming So What Sunday. The only drama involves a Champion’s League spot, and FSC, FSP, and ESPN have that covered. The rest will likely be very low rated affairs watched only by die hard supporters of their teams.
