Wigan Athletic continues their battle to escape relegation when they welcome Swansea City to the DW Stadium. Roberto Martinez’s men sit in 18th position currently with 35 points, but a win could potentially move them out of the drop zone.

Also in action today is Michael Bradley and his AS Roma side, who host Chievo Verona in Tuesday’s lone Serie A match. Roma currently sit fifth in the table and could wrap up a Europa League spot with a win today.

Manchester City looks to overcome another poor result at the last Saturday, when they host West Bromwich Albion in Premier League action. City’s recent form has allowed Chelsea to come within reach of second place in the English Premier League, a spot that last year’s title winners hope to keep to themselves.

  1. Guzan just named Villa’s Player of the Year. That’s a huge leap from perennial bench warmer. Congrats to him

    • as good as he’s been, i don’t see how it wasn’t benteke. but yeah, nice to see him get some official recognition for his stellar play.

      • This might be a good time to trot out the value vs. replacement measurement. My initial thought would have been Benteke with his 18 goals. An average team-best striker in the league scores maybe 10 goals, 11? How much better is Guzan than the average Prem keeper? Did he single handedly account for 7-8 fewer goals? Doubtful but possible.

This is the most simplistic of the statistical ways to look at it but I think it sort of works. By this measure, I’ll take Benteke but very, very narrowly.

      • Guzan has been great all season. Been in the goal since week 3 and now we’re at week 35 in the season. Benteke was slow out of the gate. In fact he hit red hot form in the past 2-3 months. Plus i’m sure fans are just thankful for Guzan considering the atrocious defense they have had.

  2. Vorm with a very sharp save on Caldwell and it is still 2-2. Wigan knocking on the door again. Swansea looking to counter. All in all, this is a cracker of a match.

The only downer is the color guy who sounds like he is doing analysis on a funeral procession. Doing his best to suck the life out of the experience.

  3. That’s why I enjoy this Wigan team so much. They really can fly down the field when they commit to attack. 2-1 and they JUST missed a third. Fun times.

    • That was a clutch shot with a small window to hit. Kone did great work putting himself in the way so the keeper couldn’t control the high ball into the box. Good stuff.

  4. Kolarov just split open the scalp of a West Brom player with his studs. Oh my god so much blood. The trainers are using full size towels to mop it up.

Dude is a champ just standing there with a several inch gash in his head.

  5. Wigan has fought relegation for the past 4 seasons. I think this is the year they go down though Sunderland and Newcastle and Southampton are also in danger

    • and Norwich.

And I hope Wigan stays up. They are more fun to watch than Sunderland or Southampton (whose goal diff makes than almost safe).

    • I hope they stay up. Yes, they’ve toiled in sub-mediocrity for the past four seasons, but they’re actually a fun team to watch. Martinez is like David Moyes; they make the most out of the small budgets they’re given.

  6. Applause for Michael Bradley. He’s really been vital for Roma, putting in really good performances. I’m amazed. Didn’t honestly figure he would become such a legit starter so early

    • Aargh… you jinxed him! He’s on the bench today (though I wouldn’t sweat it, he’s almost always on in the second half when not starting).
