MLS Week 12: Your Running Commentary

MLSLogo2013

By IVES GALARCEP

The Seattle Sounders are on a roll, having put together a five-match unbeaten streak to climb out of the Western Conference basement and make their march toward the top of the standings.

Waiting for them at the top is FC Dallas, which is in Seattle tonight to try and keep their own nine-match streak alive. They have been showing some signs of vulnerability lately, but should still give the Sounders a stiff test at CenturyLink Field.

A pair of Cascadia rivals square off in Vancouver, where the Whitecaps play host to the red-hot Timbers at BC Place. Vancover is feeling good after snapping their seven-match winless streak, but they take on a Portland side unbeaten in nine and looking like one of the best teams in MLS.

Here is a rundown of today’s MLS action:

5pm- Toronto FC vs. Columbus Crew

7pm- Vancouver Whitecaps vs. Portland Timbers

7:30pm- Philadelphia Union vs. Chicago Fire

8:30pm- Houston Dynamo vs. New England Revolution

10:30pm- San Jose Earthquakes vs. Colorado Rapids

10:30pm- Seattle Sounders vs. FC Dallas

    “They will take a defeat” . . .

WTF is that tifo supposed to mean, Vancouver? Are you trying to intimidate through your confusing misuse of English? Did Yoshi the intern make that banner for you?

TImbers new road jerseys need to be red on the front and back, especially when playing a team with all white kits.

And who is the genius that allowed both teams to wear jerseys with all-white backs?

I don’t understand the referee’s decision to Portland wear the mostly white shirt.

The ref did something similar when Chicago visited Houston and wore their red shirt which is pretty close to orange.

    CHI vs. PHI discussion questions:

    (1) Whatever happened to Sherjill MacDonald?
    (2) Why is Dilly Duka paid so much?
    (3) Why does everyone call Michael Farfan “so talented”?
    (4) How is it that Logan Pause is only 31?
    (5) Why is Amobi Okugo still in MLS, and not in the Bundesliga or Serie A?
    (6) Why is Danny Cruz still in MLS, and not in the NASL?
    (7) What exactly goes through Zac MacMath’s mind?

Red cards on Frutty and Imbongo absolute garbage officiating. Boswell Has got to miss lots of games for that. Imbongo just defending himself.

Completely disagree. Boswell head-butted Imbango – easy red card if it’s seen. Imbango retaliated – easy red card usually seen. Both deserved what they got.

Bigger question is what the disciplinary committee will do. I feel like the original head-butt deserves more than the retaliation, but I’m a NE fan, so maybe I’m biased.

So we head to halftime in the Houston vs New England game after 3 injuries, 2 red cards, a scrum, a headbutt, Juan Agudelos debut, 6 minutes of stopage time, and 18 of the 22 starters still in the game…

Was just about to post something snarky about New England being all set up to fritter the win away in the 89th minute when Agudelo scored to make it 2-0.

The Revs have some legit young talent but are still a CB away. I hope they’re planning to make a run at Boca or Goodson.

I used to like agudelo, but his rolling around was just too much. He had great minutes except for that.

I’m confused about the centerback comment. NE has the best goals against average in the league (if you take away the post leukemia diagnosis, post Boston-Marathon Reis’-father-in-law-nearly-killing, emotionally over-wrought NY game). What centerback need?

Now, if it were me, I’d vastly prefer to have a different option to McCarthy as our backup, but the defensive results have been good. If only we could could score more consistently.

I can’t believe Lee (Win) didn’t get more credit for the work he does, by his teammates or the announcers. He made those goals happen, the plays went through him, he was the connector. Always running hard too. He is my motm, but got no love from anyone. Crazy.

All facts. They hating on a youngin… Lee is playing like a boss, the biggest reason that the Revs are not the laughingstock of the league this year. Fagundez and Farrell are legit too, Europe is in their future

Note to Dallas, stop running an offside trap when you can’t do it/linesman don’t call offsides correctly.

Wow! Sounders carving up league leaders FC Dallas 2 nil at halftime. It should be worse. Eddie Johnson and Lamar Naegle with the goals

Seattle has broken Dallas’ offside trap like 5 times, maybe Dallas should take notes and stop running it

This game is so horribly sloppy that it is really exciting. Dallas scores on a corner kick (literally curled in from the corner kick like an ayso game) Eddie Johnson unmarked for like the 10th time this game quickly takes the lead. And Dallas probably should have scored again just now.

Well that’s where I usually see them, as they are entirely accidental and usually the result of some shambolic play. If that’s what Michel was trying to do than more power to him, but my guess is he put a little too much bend on it and it ended up being in the perfect spot.

Wow!!!! Again!!! A fabulous game in Seattle. Woodburn gets a SOtW nominee with save off the line with the ‘keeper stranded and Dallas gets a GotW nominee with a corner kick directly into goal to equalize!!….Minutes later Naegle puts Seattle ahead 3-2!!!…..Game of the Week no douby!!!

Little harsh on the red for Perez, impossible to jump without raising elbows although he may have cocked it a bit. Fairly obvious the better team won on the night though, if Seattle had been better with their chances could have easily had 6 or 7. Neagle was MOTM for me, terrorized Dallas all night even out wide.

I tend to agree that the red was a bit harsh. That said, Blas Perez did recklessly go up and planted his elbow into the face of Leo Gonzalez bloodying him up and knocking him out of the game. I can see why the red card was brandished….If FC Dallas (even in a loss) doesn’t get Goal AND Save of the Week, I’ll be very surprised!!!

How was it fairly obvious the better team won? Seattle was at home… And before that red, the result was entirely in the air.

Seattle created far more chances and were more dangerous throughout. Both of Dallas’ goals came from set pieces which are hardly an indicator that your team was better generally. Dallas hit the bar once, Seattle missed multiple one on ones with the goalie.

^^ This ^^ Also, FC Dallas defense was atrocious!

And yet my points remain. An incredibly fun game with the result still in the air was ended by a bad call. Seattle should hold posession at home, and obviously missing John and David hurt the back line and Dallas’ posession. Still, it was up in the air until the red.

Seattle was missing players as well, that could be argued every game for every team. Rosales and Zakuani both held out. Alonso left after like 20 minutes. If you watched that game there is no way you could say that dallas played better than seattle. Dallas made the most of their set pieces but really didnt create much in open play. Was it still in the air? Ya probably, but the better team won on the night

Again! This^^. For anyone to think the red card or anything else was the reason Seattle won is simply lost. Seattle was the better team in the run of play and fully deserved the win…Injuries are just an excuse! Every MLS team has them. NO EXCUSE!
