CONCACAF Gold Cup rosters released

CONCACAF released the full 23-man roster list for all 12 nations participating at this summer’s Gold Cup, with the likes of the English Premier League, German Bundesliga, Spanish La Liga, and French Ligue 1 all represented.

Defending champions Mexico enter the competition with a considerably weaker squad due to sending their A side to the Confederations Cup in Brazil, but they should still challenge for the title. The U.S. has also left off a number of regular internationals, with the hope of bringing in fringe players to see if they can earn a place on next year’s likely World Cup squad.

32 of the players selected in the squads make their home in Major League Soccer’s 19 teams, while an additional four players play their soccer in either USL-Pro, NASL, or in the case of Belize’s Michael Salazar, in NCAA Division 1 soccer for UC-Riverside.

  1. I believe all but two of Mexico’s defenders play on the outside, so I see only 2 natural CB’s. That could be a problem, and overall am not too excited looking at the squad. Missing players like Jona Dos Santos and Davila to really make it more exciting.

    • Exactly !!!

Jonathan Dos Santos is a marginal player I believe he is only at Barca because it was his fathers condition for Gio signing

  2. I want Martinique to win and potentially go to the confederations cup, just to mess with FIFA. I could be wrong but I think they are not allowed to play in FIFA events, only regional ones, as they are not a FIFA member. However, since their warmup game tonight is a friendly against the Timbers U23 team at a local Portland city park, I’m thinking their expectations are not so high.

    • The spot would just pass down to the highest-ranking eligible team. It’s the same as would happen if an invited team won the Copa America.

  3. Since I don’t follow Liga MX, don’t know these Mexican players. For the other squads, Honduras looks the most dangerous, better than Costa Rica.

    • Martinique is part of CONCACAF but not FIFA.

A lot of French players who have roots on the island but no chance of playing for the senior French team probably jump at the chance to play international soccer.

    • When Guadeloupe played in the Gold CUP o few years ago, they surprised a lot of teams, but upon closer scrutiny, a lot of their players played in the second and a few in the first division of French football. there are more than a few on the Haiti and Martinique team.

    • How serious was the injury? I see from the match stats that he left in the 41′, but that doesn’t mean the injury is necessarily so severe that he will miss the whole Gold Cup tournament.

That would be a shame, but I’m also too worried about our outside midfielders:

Donovan, Bedoya, Corona, Holden, Beasley, Gomez, Castillo and Ashe can all play there.

      Reply
      • yeah, there is nothing indicating the severity. still annoying though. but i still say, now that Twente are rumored to be interested in Bedoya, i want him to be able to play.

  4. Hey Ives,

I’d love to see an article on the impact the MLS has had on CONCACAF teams. By my count, there’s over 30 MLS players representing their countries at the Gold Cup (obviously, that isn’t including the Jamaicans who are well represented in MLS.) Seems, MLS has been good for the development of the game for the entire region. I’ve always believed better CONCACAF competition is a good thing for the US.

    • I noticed this when the rosters were posted for WC qualifying. I think MLS is of greater benefit to Central American players than to US.players.

    • 32 MLS players, yet the MLS schedule is going to play on as usual. Is there any major league in any sport where 32 of the (presumably) best players would be in another competition yet league games are still played?

      • The Olympic team was U23. It is nice to win but really it means nothing.

It’s like saying Notre Dame is going to beat the Niners cause they won the BCS championship

      • LOL… I was about to type the same thing, the only difference I was going to use Basketball analogy

      • I remember that the USMNT was beaten by a U23 brazilian team last year like 4-1 or something like that, then Mexico beat that same brazilian team in London…

      • Shut up, USMNT only has Gold Cup titles, can only dream of winning the Gold Medal in men’s football.

      • I get the feeling your name is not really “Rob Jones” but a little more Hispanic in nature….

      • You can put MEX above everyone but they won’t win because their fans are disrespectful towards other countries during their national anthems and they are disruptive and childish during games when they don’t score (which is about every game now)

      • And American fans are the epitome of class? Do I need to remind you of the latest fan brawls at MLS games and the interruption in the moment of silence for the Japan tsunami one time?

You are a very misguided individual.

    • Haha Canada is honestly a joke, wont make even make it out of the group stage. I rank them at the bottom with Cuba, T & T, and belize
