With just minutes remaining in their physical match with the visiting Philadelphia Union, Toronto FC seemed destined to end their late game woes.

The struggling Toronto squad, up 1-0 off a Jonathan Osorio goal, was on the verge of their second win of the season when a late Union throw-in fell into the path of league-leading scorer Jack McInerney.

From there, it was déjà vu for Toronto in more ways than one.

McInerney, who scored a last-minute equalizer in the two sides’ April meeting at PPL Park, drilled a low shot that found its way into the corner of Joe Bednik’s net to snatch a road point for the Union.

The tie, which extended their winless streak to a dozen games, marked the tenth and eleventh points Toronto has dropped due to late goals this season.

Despite their recent offensive struggles, Toronto attacked from the opening whistle and dominated the first half action. A second yellow card for Doneil Henry put Toronto a man down in the 41st minute, but the offense continued to create most of the chances after halftime.

Toronto finally broke the deadlock in the 66th minute when substitute Jeremy Brockie slung a cross that found the head of a leaping Osorio. The 20-year-old midfielder, who earned his first cap for the Canadian national team earlier this week, nodded home his third goal of the season to give TFC an unlikely 1-0 lead.

Assist man Brockie was substituted off just before the end of regular time for Designated Player Danny Koevermans, making his first appearance since his knee injury last July.

All signs pointed to a happy ending for a frustrated Toronto side until Sheanon Williams’s long throw-in was headed only as far as McInerney. The striker, who was called up to the United States’ preliminary Gold Cup squad earlier this week, turned back the clock once more and notched his 10th goal of the season.

The tie brings the Union’s record to 5-5-4 on the season as they prepare for an upcoming midweek match against Columbus. TFC, winners of only one of their last 27 matches, will be 1-7-5 heading into a bye week.
