NASL Week 10: A Look Ahead

GeorgiHristov1-CarolinaRailhawks (TampaBayRowdies)

By MIKE GRAMAJO

Two of the North American Soccer League’s top three goalscorers meet on Saturday in a clash between the Carolina RailHawks and the Tampa Bay Rowdies at WakeMed Soccer Park.

Brian Shriver leads the league and the RailHawks’ attack with six goals, but not far behind is the Rowdies’ Georgi Hristov, who has four goals to his name. Both teams failed to take the top spot last week, finishing with draws on the road as they sit tied in second place with 12 points.

The Atlanta Silverbacks, who had a bye-week during week nine, return to action as they welcome in a struggling FC Edmonton on Saturday. The Eddies have a chance to catch up against the Silverbacks, who sit in first place with 14 points, if the RailHawks and Rowdies draw that same night.

“We’ve got it all to play for on Saturday and the lads are up for it,” Eddies coach Colin Miller told the team’s website. “The Silverbacks are a tough side to beat at home so we’ll have to be at our best.”

Many new additions during the offseason has yet to pay off as the Fort Lauderdale Strikers visit the Metrodome to battle Minnesota United. The Strikers played to a disappointing 1-1 draw last week against the RailHawks, conceding a goal late in the game just when Scott Gordon looked to have given the South Florida side three points when he scored on a header in the 37th minute.

Team To Watch: The Carolina RailHawks late-game heroics last week showed they’re still a force to deal with in the NASL this spring. Along with forward Brian Shriver’s six goals this season, the RailHawks can put more pressure on first place Silverbacks if they are able to secure a victory over the Rowdies on Saturday night.
