Puebla part ways with Beasley

DaMarcusBeasley Puebla (Puebla)

By DAN KARELL

DaMarcus Beasley’s two years with Puebla helped rejuvenate his playing career, but now his time there is over.

The 31-year-old U.S. Men’s National Team player was unable to negotiate a new contract with the Liga MX club and will be looking for a new home come the start of next season. The club announced the news on Tuesday night via their Twitter account.

Beasley, who recently earned his 100th USMNT cap, moved to Puebla two years ago, joining the club ahead of their 2011 Apertura season. He went from hardly playing at Hannover in the Bundesliga to becoming a fan favorite within months in Mexico. His play in Liga MX helped give him another opportunity with the national team as well.

The Fort Wayne, Indiana native scored 11 goals in 64 Liga MX appearances for Puebla.

What do you make of this news? Do you see Beasley staying in Mexico? Do you believe he’ll return to MLS? Europe?

  1. Haven’t seen this mentioned and I’m sure it’s a long shot but why not play in Italy? or Turkey? maybe MB’s agent can talk him up some.

But I think MLS would probably be a better option since he is more likely to get regular playing time (which is what he needs for the next year) there.

  2. not really surprised given the struggles puebla has had paying wages. no doubt he was making a pretty penny there. anyway, i would be awesome to see him in MLS but i bet he finds another Liga LX team.

  3. It’s likely that Puebla put them on the transfer list because they have an offer already. Today is the annual ‘draft’ in Mexico when all domestic transfers take place. So by EOD we will know if he stays in LigaMX.

  4. I’d like to see him continue in Mexico. I think he would be a good fit for Xolos. I also think it would be pretty cool to see him in a Club America shirt. Not sure if he can break that starting lineup though.

  5. He’s on the preliminary Gold Cup roster, so perhaps can use that as an opportunity to stay in game shape while looking for a new team.

  6. As a RBNY supporter, I’d switch out Roy Miller (who has, I realize, played pretty well recently) for DMB in a heartbeat.

  7. This will be his last chance at the ripe age of 31 for DMB to get a decent payday and that should be his prime objective. DMB cannot depend on love-’em-and-leave-’em Klinsmann to remain true forever. Klinsmann has turned on a couple of other players who at one time were faves and will turn against DMB on a dime if it suits his purposes.

And that is another reason I am against the DMB at left back thing. I think part of the reason Klinsmann persists in this farce is because it has not gone off a cliff like some of his other experiments–Williams at right wing and Jose Torres as left back. I will be very surprised to see DMB at left back beyond this summer, and certainly not next year at WC 2014 and it would really be heartbreaking to see DMB eased out of the team never having a chance to play his club position, which I think he could play well for the USMNT.

And after saying that, I got my fingers crossed that Jurgen surprises and starts Fabian at LB Friday and DMB at LW.

  8. He should come to Portland. We could switch Harrington to RB and use him as LB. Although IWallace is having a great season as LW, so he would be out of his usual position, but he would get more time on a side that uses its outside backs in the attack.

  9. To me, DMB is at that stage where I don’t care where he goes, as long as it makes him happy and he gets some minutes. The old warrior deserves to find a good sport to end his career and if he keeps getting minutes and helping the USMNT, then all the better.

    • ^ This. As long as he’s getting minutes and he’s happy with the move, I don’t think it really matters where he ends up. Strictly from the perspective of being able to watch him play, it would be great to see him back in MLS.

    • Agreed! I still remember going to see him play 90 minutes for the US at Soldier Field back when they used to schedule doubleheaders with MLS. He then came back out and tried to help the Fire find a goal in the last ~10 minutes of their game. The DMB engine never stops.

  10. not clue what his salary was last season, but i assume that will dictate his expectations. Agree that he will most likely end up back in Europe as a serviceable veteran who is playing at a pretty decent level right now. obviously, this was not a surprise to him or his agent so they were in negotiations, so they probably have something else brewing

  11. I’m sure this will work out. If he hadn’t been playing, it might be a career-ender, but he proved his worth in Mexico and now in the USMNT. I’m sure someone appropriate will pick him up, be it in MLS or MX. I’m hoping for MX for what it’s worth. I love having non-Mexican-American Americans in the Mexican league. It’s a good thing.

      • As an African-American I enjoy seeing non Mexican-American Americans playing in leagues in the Americas whether that be North America, South America or Central America

        Also once more … America

    • +1 i would be excited about him coming back to MLS but another LigaMX contract would be great too. i can’t think of another American without Mexican heritage to play in the LigaMX…

      • Yes, I think more should go to Mexico rather than make the European leap. Robbie Rogers, for example (leaving aside the sexuality issues), maybe Tim Ream. Freddy Adu. I suppose there are safety concerns that keep some from going as well.

  12. I for one would like to see him make a move back to Europe to a low-tier team or newly-promoted team in need of experience. The new Hoffenheim coach said this week that he wants to bring in a couple of older players to provide leadership for his young squad. DMB has shown in recent USMTN games that he still has a lot of good stuff and he is only one year older than Clint and the same age as Donovan and a bit younger than JJ90Y.

I know I am in the minority here, but I will say it anyway: Too bad that Jurgen has been playing DMB at LB instead of left wing.

    • Hoffenheim would be a great move, playing on the left with Fabian Johnson every week leading up to the world cup, would give the USMNT a big boost.

    • Actually I’m part of the minority as well and I think that’s a great spot for him.
Now, the question is that since he’s without club, does JK (AKA the Hypocrite) not play him til this is resolved a la Bocanegra, a la Onyewu?

Hopefully this doesn’t matter at this stage of the game but I had to put it out there.

Personally, I’d love to see him return to the Fire but I’m guessing he’s not looking in that direction and with current ownership why in the hell would he wanna deal with the never ending Rebuild Project.

      • Currently in the off-season, he isn’t really any more without a club than any free agent in any US sport is

      • I agree except a certain defender who was on the books at Rangers when they were relegated seemed to be treated like a leper back in the day.

      • Yes because he was without a club during the season so he was missing actual game time. Beasley is without a club during the offseason so he’s not actually missing anything. If he’s still not signed come the start of the season, we’ll start talking about this again.

      • And let’s not forget that Eric Lichaj haters used this no club argument when they defended Klinsmann’s decision to snub him yet again by saying Lichaj’s club had declined to extend his contract.

    • I don’t think it’s a minority. DB looks out of place at left back and, in my opinion, has no business playing there for the national team. He’s still better than Castillo though.

      Reply
      • No business at left back? What about the game against Costa Rica, Mexico or even Belgium when he was one of the only bright spots. Guess you didn’t watch those? His defensive ability has increased tremendously and he’ll always provide going forward, being someone who used to play out of the midfield..

      • ya he has done well in the past 4 US games.. enough to satisfy me. Ya its not his natural position and years ago he wasn’t as good back there but it is clearly working.

  13. Not surprising really given the mess Puebla is in–not paying wages, property seizures. They probably can’t pay the cleaning staff let alone the players new contracts.

  14. I think Beasly would fit well in Dallas or even freaking DC, geez DC need all the help they can get they need to be looking at any and everyody.

  15. I think this is pretty significant news. He looks like our first choice LB right now and he doesn’t have a team.

  16. Tijuana would be nice.

or if Dynamo could shed the Cummings and Camargo contracts he’d be nice, could you imagine Ashe, Beasley, Driver on their left flank? lordy.

    Reply
    • I hope we have a Camargo out. And maybe we can drop Moffat off somewhere also. The midfield has really improved.

Try Beasley and Davis on the left, Ashe given the wrong directions to the stadium. Driver as first sub off bench either left or right wing. Long term Driver may be Davis’ left wing replacement, he’s getting older.

The Cummings trade and Weaver/Ching signings are what are primarily holding us back right now. I think the defense could be better but it’s playoff-sufficient. But we’ve got a Porsche Cayman midfield with a 80s F150 front line.

      • Beasley should join DC United. They need all the help they can get … plus they have the same shirt sponsor!

  17. It’s probably just as well from a pocketbook perspective, they weren’t paying players for a period, having property seized. I think he’s done well returning to the Americas so I’d say US or Mexico. If he wants to continue the run to the 23 (or maybe even XI) it needs to be a relatively riskless choice where they might even play him as a back.

    • MLS as an LB would be very problematic with the rights and allocation limitations combined with the fact that very few MLS teams use their backs offensively, so he wouldn’t fit in as an LB with most teams.

      Reply
    • Was he sold or did he leave on a free? Because I thought if he left at contract end he was default Fire property. Thought allocations were if you were first coming to MLS or were sold out of the league.

      Reply
      • The rights only last so long, 4 years I believe, but I could be wrong. He’s been gone longer than that, so I *think* he’d have to go through allocation.

  18. Sentimentally, I’d love to see him return to the Fire, but really don’t have a good sense of whether he’d be a good fit anymore.

More importantly, now that he’s cut loose, how will this impact his USMNT role? I’m hoping he’s picked up soon by somewhere that has him playing regularly.
