Reports: Galaxy after ‘El Tri’ star Dos Santos

It is no secret that the Los Angeles Galaxy are looking for a star player to help fill the void left by the departure of David Beckham last winter, but multiple reports have the Galaxy targeting a young star who could be a game-changer both on and off the field.

According to multiple reports that surfaced on Wednesday evening, the Galaxy are in pursuit of Mexican national team star Giovani Dos Santos. The Los Angeles Times reported on the pursuit, and linked the Galaxy’s hard push for a Latin American player to the team’s recent multi-million dollar television deal with Time Warner Cable.

ESPN Deportes is reporting that the Galaxy have offered Dos Santos an $8 million a year deal that would be the biggest contract in MLS history.

If the Galaxy can succeed in luring Dos Santos away from Europe (he currently plays for Mallorca), it would signal a major coup for a league that has yet to sign such a high-profile star at such a young age (Dos Santos is 24).

The Galaxy had been in pursuit of English star Frank Lampard, and reportedly came close to landing him before Lampard chose to re-sign with Chelsea. With Dos Santos in the frame now, the Galaxy could wind up landing a player who is even more of a marketing bonanza considering his appeal in the Mexican-American community.

What do you think of this deal? Excited at the prospects of Dos Santos joining MLS? Think this move puts the Mike Magee into a different perspective?

  1. LAG should know better than pandering to the Mexican population. Luis Hernandez and 5 Million back in the day… Did all the Mexicans come out in droves to see him play? LOL. Even with Hermosillio, where were the Mexicans?

Gio is a good player but highly overrated. He will not succeed in MLS because of its athleticism.
Players here might get beat on the first step but they will catch up to him after a few yards and tackle him hard. Dude will last 1 year and go back to Europe or Mexico.

Spend the 8 M on Ronaldinho and you will get the all soccer fans coming out to see him, not just
    Mexicans.

    • you are overhyping the MLS, is not even close to be as physical as La Liga and he is already a top player in Spain

      • Ronaldinho is a skilled player who improves the attack. Gio uses his individual skill to beat players and use his speed to get pass them on the first step. Gio is not same type as Ronny if that is what you are implying.
Ronny is old and is not going to blow by players with his middle aged speed. Face reality man, Gio is good player but is not world class and if LAG is stupid enough to pay that much then they haven’t learned anything from the Luis Hernandez bust.

  2. not going to happen, would be a career suicide just like it happened to Marquez, everyone in Mexico started to dislike him after he rejected offers from other big european clubs and moved to the MLS, also the press in Mexico is already saying that moving to LA would be the worst mistake in Dos Santos’ career and that he should go to Valencia.

  3. Let’s look at it from a futbol prospective, does LAG need another forward? LAG needs a true playmaker, without Keane who helps the midfield more than anyone, LAG is not the same team.
LAG should take a pass on Geo and go after a player like KAKA’s statute.
