With injuries to all over the backline, the Columbus Crew have had to elevate a homegrown signing into the starting lineup.

On Saturday, Crew right back Chad Barson stepped up to the task, playing 90 minutes and effectively shutting out Justin Mapp and Marco Di Vaio of the Montreal Impact in a 2-0 victory, earning Barson SBI MLS Rookie of the Week.

Barson beat out Crew teammate Ben Speas, Colorado Rapids forward Deshorn Brown, and New England Revolution defender Scott Caldwell for this week’s honors.

What did you make of Barson’s performance? Which rookie stood out the most to you in MLS Week 16?

  1. 3 or 4 finalist this week former Akron players. and Nagbe won goal of week. you could put a team of former Akron players in MLS and they would be near top of table.

Game day 18: Evan Bush, David Meves, Darlington Nagbe, Kofi Sarkodie, Ben Zemanski, Anthony Ampaipitakwong, Chad Barson, Scott Caldwell, Darren Mattocks, Steve Zakuani, Teal Bunbury, Perry Kitchen, Chris Korb, Michael Nanchoff, Zarek Valentin, Will Trapp, Deandre Yedlin, Dillon Serna

    That’s pretty amazing.

  2. His performance on Saturday was solid. But more impressive has been his decision making over the course of the last few weeks. He has gone forward at the right times and has beaten several defenders off of the dribble (even drawing one penalty while doing so). The team hasn’t gotten many results over that time period, but it hasn’t been because of him.

So yes, I think Barson deserves it, but more for his accumulated good games over the last 3-4 weeks.
