MLS West Notes: RSL’s Schuler might need foot surgery; Rapids still after Eloundou; and more

Chris Schuler, who hasn’t played in a match since May 11 due to a foot injury, looks set to miss two to four more weeks, and might require surgery, according to the Deseret News.

Schuler has been sidelined since early May due to foot pain the same right foot that he had trouble with in 2012. If Schuler does need surgery, RSL will be left with just three centerbacks on its roster. The team just lost centerback Kwame Watson-Siriboe last week to season-ending ACL surgery.

RSL has enjoyed a strong run of form, with young centerback Carlos Salcedo stepping up to fill the void left by the injuries to Schuler and Watson-Siriboe.

Here are some more news and notes from around the Western Conference heading into MLS Week 18 action:

COLORADO RAPIDS

Six months after the Rapids were awarded the MLS rights to Charles Eloundou, the club is still waiting for the Cameroonian striker to make his way to the United States. Colorado Technical Director Paul Bravo is planning a trip to Africa in July to try and find a way to get the 18-year-old into a Colorado uniform this season.

According to the Denver Post, landing Eloundou to Colorado is still a priority for the club.

“We’re gonna be patient with him and we’re not going to give up,” Rapids President Tim Hinchley told the newspaper. “It’s a permanent deal now. It’s not a loan. When MLS finally gets FIFA and those governing bodies to fix the corruptness of that area, he’s gonna be ours.”

CHIVAS USA

Edgar Mejia, who has missed the last three games for Chivas USA with an ankle injury, has returned to practice and is looking to make his return in Saturday’s match against the New England Revolution. Mejia, who is on loan from Chivas Guadalajara, is currently tied for the team lead in assists with three.

FC DALLAS

Walker Zimmerman’s omission from the US U-20 World Cup roster turned out to be a positive for both Zimmerman and FC Dallas. Zimmerman’s game-tying stoppage time goal not only brought a point for his club, but also gave his parents see Zimmerman play in Dallas for the first time.

“They came down not expecting me to play and if I did play, that was great. But it was a little icing on the cake for their trip to come see me to first of all be able to play and then score a goal in that fashion,” Zimmerman told the Dallas Morning News.

LOS ANGELES GALAXY

Jack McBean, who broke his collarbone in April, is ready to return to the field for the Galaxy. While McBean has been listed on the gameday roster for the last two matches, he has yet to see the field for the club since the injury. The 18-year-old did play 15 minutes in LA’s June 15 reserve match and believes he could have played in the SuperClassico if called upon.

PORTLAND TIMBERS

The Portland Timbers U-23 team will play in the PDL side’s first ever international friendly when they take on the Martinique National Team in Portland on Saturday. Martinique is training in Portland in preparation for the Gold Cup and features Timbers striker Frederic Piquionne.

The U-23s currently sit in second place in the PDL’s Northwest Division, while Martinique will be making its first appearance in the Gold Cup since 2003. The friendly will take place at Buckman Field and is free to the public.

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES

With Mark Watson leaving his assistant coach’s spot for the head job, the Earthquakes needed to find a replacement for Watson’s old spot on the bench. They found their replacement in the form of former Canadian National Team player Nick Dasovic.

As a player, Dasovic spent the largest portion of his career with St. Johnstone of Scotland. Since retiring as a player, Dasovic has coached with the Whitecaps, Canadian soccer and Toronto FC. He managed ten games for Toronto FC in 2010 after Preki was fired mid-season.

SEATTLE SOUNDERS

Fans attending Sounders home matches will now be screened by handheld metal detectors, the club announced Wednesday. The program was first introduced to Seahawk games last seasons and will make its Sounders debut on July 3.

VANCOUVER WHITECAPS

The Whitecaps waived rookie centerback Adam Clement on Wednesday though it is possible that Clement might play for the club’s PDL side in the future. Clement was a supplemental draft pick and had not seen any playing time with the club. The 22-year-old, did however, play 19 matches for the club’s reserve and U-23 teams.

As a result of the move, it is possible that the Whitecaps move to sign a player off its U-23 side. According to Marc Weber of the Province, Vancouver might look at signing Sam Adekugbe or Ethen Sampson at the conclusion of the PDL season.

  2. Ives,

The MLS East/West threads are excellent.

Speaking of Shuler,….whatever happended to Billy Shuler from UNC who spurned MLS for Europe,…Hammarby (?). Is there a trend with ACC kids who slepp off to Europe only to disapear,…Marcus Tracy, Billy Shuler,…

Lastly,…was Jack McBean in the U-20 picture before he was injured?

    • McBean attended the U-20 camp for the qualifiers, but as he, at that time, was a starter, I think Ramos didn’t call him up for the later camp. Before his injury, he was definitely on the radar. He would have brought a different dimension to the U20’s as he was the only “power forward” that plays well with his back to the goal, and holds up well. At around 6’1″ with good ability in the air, he would have been a good target in the box.
