The end of Orlando City’s run in the U.S. Open Cup apparently also meant the end of Dom Dwyer’s time with the club.

A day after the Lions were bounced out of the competition with a 5-1 loss at the Chicago Fire, Sporting Kansas City owner Robb Heineman tweeted that Dwyer would be rejoining his club later on Thursday. Dwyer appeared to confirm his departure from Orlando, retweeting several goodbye messages from Lions’ fans as well as tweeting out a photo of him on a plane.

Dwyer’s exit from Orlando should not come as a big surprise. He has been tearing it up in USL PRO since joining Orlando City via loan, and Sporting KC head coach Peter Vermes recently told SBI that recalling Dwyer was always a possibility given the forward’sĀ form and the number of games Kansas City has coming up.

“For sure, there’s definitely a possibility because we have (CONCACAF) Champions League starting up, so we have other things that are coming our way,” Vermes told SBI. “Nothing is off the table. It’s something we look at our team week after week and see what games are coming up and we kind of have an idea of what we want to do and when we want to do it.”

Dwyer may be heading back to Sporting KC, but that does not mean the 22-year-old will stay there for the rest of the campaign. As part of the clubs’ affiliate agreement, Dwyer and the other Sporting KC players on loan with Orlando City could bounce back and forth if that is what the teams decide is in their and the players’ best interest.

“The way the loan deal is, is that we basically have an open window between both organizations,” said Vermes. “We can bring them back, we can send them back, I can send more guys down from here. It’s not a stringent as if he were playing in a different country. It’s a lot more flexible.”

What do you think of Dwyer being recalled by Sporting KC? Think his goal-scoring success will translate over? How do you see Orlando City faring without him?

  1. Some of these top forwards coming out of college are really good finishers. Its a shame there’s not more opportunities to play a full 90 in MLS. Usually the MLS teams stack their forward slots with DPs and foreigners.

    • If the whole world operated this way we would be living in mediocrity. C’mon man, challenges aren’t a bad thing, they encourage hard work and determination. Want to take a spot, you know what, WORK for it instead of just having it handed to you.

      • For the record, when I say “you” I mean that in a general sense, not you specifically of course.

      • My concern is these American forwards don’t have the proper development channels. When they’re thrown into games with 10-15 minutes to play they feel alot of pressure to score. If they’re given 90 minutes they have more chances to score, more chances to secure a starting spot and the ability to gain confidence. Compare with Terrance Boyd, he was getting 90 minutes on Dortmund’s 2nd team, now he’s getting 90 min at Rapid Vienna. His next step maybe a be a lower or mid-table Bundesliga team. Thats a lot better for his development than getting 10 minutes a game on Dortmund’s 1st team.

      • Would y’all agree then, that an arrangement such as the MLS/USL affiliates in which Dwyer has been on loan from SKC to Orlando City is a fairly good solution to this problem, at least for now at this juncture of MLS’ progress? He’s been a beast for OC for the past four months and hopefully he’ll step right into the SKC first eleven and rely on his recent form to quickly produce for SKC.

  2. It will hurt in the short term as so much of the offense became focused through Dwyer but there is enough talent there to fill in the gap. He was really ripped though…Chin and Mbegue need to get on Dwyer’s workout plan do they don’t get pushed around so much in the box.

  3. It would be nice if Orlando got someone in return, maybe Bunbury perhaps. The loss of Dwyer is going to hurt a lot, he was scoring at will with Orlando.

    • OCSC will get someone in return–the terms of the affiliate agreement dictate that SKC must have four players on loan to them at all times. I also think Teal Bunbury would be a good canddiate as he builds back up to full fitness, because this means SKC as is has basically four strikers for a one-striker formation (Bieler, Bunbury, Dwyer, and Sapong–who is usually miscast as a winger instead).

      • Josh I really like Long Tan, he is great on the ball, good technique, and reads the game well, but he just isn’t scoring goals. Let’s hope that changes. Add to that last seasons USL top scorer Dennis Chin has been no where to be seen, the loss of Dom hurts OCSC.
