Toronto FC’s roster shakeup continued on Thursday with word that the club has waived Canadian midfielder Terry Dunfield.

TFC cut ties with the Canadian National Team midfielder in order to focus on the team’s collection of younger central midfield options. The arrival of Mattias Laba and impressive development of Jonathan Osorio and Jeremy Hall, coupled with the presence of playmaker Luis Silva, made Dunfield expendable.

“This was a difficult decision to make but our midfielders have been playing well, and there are young players to develop and find minutes for. We felt this was the best decision for both the club and Terry moving forward,” said TFC head coach Ryan Nelsen in a team-issued statement.

What next for the 31-year old? Though regarded as a solid midfielder, Dunfield could find landing somewhere in MLS difficult given his international status. The other Canadian teams don’t appear to be viable options, which means Dunfield could wind up signing in the NASL unless some MLS team with central midfield needs and an available international player slot make a play for him.

Dunfield had been sidelined with a knee injury that has kept him out of action since April. Acquired from Vancouver at the start of the 2012 season, Dunfield made 40 MLS appearances for TFC, scoring three goals.

What do you think of this development? See Dunfield catching on him MLS with another team? Think Toronto FC is making a mistake waiving Dunfield?

  1. Isn’t he CBA tenured/guaranteed where you eat his salary for cap purposes (and maybe even paycheck) even if you cut him? I thought tenured players were guaranteed around opening day and non-tenured were guaranteed after a roster freeze deadline.

This might be for the best long term but thinking of teams like the Astros, a bad team that was fairly stripped down is not going to get significantly better by cutting mediocre veterans and relying on dice rolls on prospects, the faster route back to success is to actually buy some more Earnshaws. One look at their roster and it’s like Dunfield is a minor slice of the problem, it’s just not a very intimidating roster.

    • FWIW I thought Mariner already played the let’s try the kids and use motivation game. Lipstick on a pig and he got cashiered.

  2. I can see him ended up maybe in Edmonton or Ottawa next year maybe even. He is definitely not the most talented guy, but he plays hard and its hard to argue he doesn’t give his all when he is on the pitch. He would be great to help one of the younger Canadian teams moving forward.

  3. Dunny is a nice guy, but I’d be surprised to see him continue his career anywhere in MLS at this point.

He’s the old style of defensive midfielder who can’t move the ball and his wheels are finished so he can’t be the all-action battering ram in the middle.

  4. Bye bye Dunny, I for one will miss him, not a lot mind. Can’t forget the last second winner against Vancouver and the crazy face celebration afterwards. Almost universally hated by non-Anglo TFC fans though.

  5. International status. Sidelined with an injury since April. Lied on his birth certificate.

    Three strikes and you’re out!

  6. Always liked him. Not the most talented player but he’s a tough player that was willing to get stuck in on tackles. Looking way back, we never should have gotten rid of Sam Cronin as our DM.

Hopefully he winds up at a good club and can leave the nightmare that is TFC behind him.

  7. I think Gregg berhalter could use a helping hand on the American/ Canadian presence at hammaraby

  8. You don’t think Vancouver might take him back? They seem pretty set on Davidson in the middle, but Dunfield would have to be an upgrade over Watson. Also he could slide into defense in a pinch, which might be helpful now that they’ve gotten rid of Rochat.

  9. I can never decide between josh saunders and Terry Dunfield of who had the rougher night, both of them look like they are in a constant state of hangover.
