The New England Revolution had cooled off, seeing a once-promising five-match unbeaten streak morph into a three-match winless slide that threatened to leave them floating away from the Eastern Conference playoff race they had worked so hard to play themselves into.

Saer Sene and Dimitry Imbongo delivered the goals while New England’s defense returned to its stingy ways as the Revs shut down the San Jose Earthquakes, 2-0, at Gillette Stadium.

The Earthquakes mustered just two shots on goal on a night when the Revs pelted Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch with nine shots on goal. Playing without injured striker Juan Agudelo, the Revs were still able to keep pressure on San Jose’s defense through the first-half efforts of Sene, Kelyn Rowe and Lee Nguyen.

The Revs broke through in the 13th minute when Sene blasted a 25-yard left-footed shot past Busch just seconds after having Busch make a quality save on another attempt.

Busch helped keep the Earthquakes in the match, delivering a beautiful kick save on a goal-bound Andrew Farrell shot in the 34th minute.

The Revs finally found their insurance goal in the 78th minute when Lee Nguyen ran onto a Rowe pass and quickly one-timed a pass to the front of goal, where Ibongo slipped in and finished from close range.

The loss marked San Jose’s third defeat in four matches, leaving the Earthquakes six points out of the playoff pack in the Western Conference, having played more matches than any other team in MLS (20).

Here are the match highlights:

What did you think of the match? Impressed with the Revs defense? Think Rowe is quietly becoming one of the better young midfielders in MLS?

  1. Tough season… we need to get the full side back together and add Goodson, and even then it may be too late to salvage the season. We’ve been so thin, it’s been musical chairs all over the field and continuity has been lacking, especially in defense. Losing Wondo and Chavez for the GC couldn’t come at a worse time. At this point, the true fans know the situation, time to quit ragging on second string guys…time to get behind the boys and ride it out…get back on firm ground and build through the CCL.

  2. I think the Revs are one of the funnest teams in MLS to watch – ball movement, one-on- ones, players with interesting connections with countries like Vietnam, Peru, France, Columbia, Uruguay, Portugal….You have Nguyen, Fa-undez, Rowe, Farrell, Sene, Agudelo when not injured, Goncalvez, and now Imbongo from the Congo. They are also developing young US players, and their defense has allowed the least number of points. Kudos to Jay Heaps. I am a little biased since I live in Louisville and saw Farrell play at U of Louisville. He has an interesting story as well.

  4. On a season-long winless streak? Invite the Quakes to town and watch your fortunes changes!

FFS. Our posession and finishing this year show just how poor our defense is and has been since last year. A poster on BS said it best: Every game played without our new coach is a game wasted.

    • Yea we suck! last year was LUCK, simple as that. We’ve been horrible ever since ’08 when we were lucky enough to get our team back. Mediocrity seems to be our status quo for a LOOONG time. I was happy for Wondo last year, but at the same time I knew that by having so much luck and pulling the season we had it only put a fall sense of the real quality we have on our team. Save for maybe 5-6 players our whole team is just not very good i’m afraid.
We need a new coach and players that actually know a thing or two about what’s expected when you play in 1st division futbol.

      • Frank go support your Giants and stay out of soccer, we don’t need front running whinny *itch’s like you in the stands anyway can we please keep that crap in the city?

      • HAHA….been a season ticket holder for years buddy, no need to attack, then again maybe that’s how they do it in the south bay??
If you’re ok with the way things are running, then I feel sorry for fans like you…….mediocrity!

    • Well, we won’t get a new coach anytime soon, because he’ll need to finish the season at Houston.
