U.S. U-18 coach Perez names squad for Milk Cup

U.S. Under-18 Men’s National Team head coach Javier Perez has named four professional players on an 18-man roster for the upcoming Milk Cup in Northern Ireland.

Three Red Bulls homegrown signings, Santiago Castaño, Amando Moreno, and Matt Miazga are on the squad, as well as two other academy players from the club, Christopher Lema and Alex Muyl. Ethan Horvath, a goalkeeper who recently signed with Molde FK in Norway, is the fourth professional on the roster.

Five players from the U.S. U-17 squad at the CONCACAF U-17 championship will make their U-18 debuts in the internationally-known tournament.

The tournament, which runs from July 29-August 2, features matches against Mexico, Northern Ireland, and Denmark.

Here’s a closer look at the U.S. Under-18 squad:

    Why only 3 midfielders?

Also just anyone know the status of Joel Soñora? He played with the U-17 squad and was easily the best player on the team. He’s a dual national though so I was wondering if there’s been any news about his US future.

    • Michael Jackson

Only 3 mids because the formation will be a 5-1-4

This is the way we will develop the next Kyle Beckerman

      • Capstone

You say that as if “the next Kyle Beckerman” means something.

    • Paul Miller

Weird, but obviously they’ll play some forwards as middies. Why they didn’t list some of those guys as middies…?

      • Ryan B

  • Rory

Is it me or does it seem like the milk cup
Is held twice a year? I swear I remember hearing about the last four or five teams for it in just a few years… Is time moving this quickly?

  • Ryan

Ditto on the Flores point. Are we trying to freeze this kid out or something?

He’s shown a lot when he has been called up.

    • Paul Miller

Is he a U18? I thought his delayed contract went into effect when he turns 18, and also thought I heard he was already in Dortmund.

    • chris

Moore and Rubin have a alot of euro interest and Henkel just left PSG. Nothing inexcusable about that

      • rees

Moore is biding his time until he’s 18 so he can sign a pro deal in Europe. He’s been a fixture in the US youth teams – no problem at all that he’s unattached.

    • Annelid Gustator

Dude was, a year ago, in the PSG academy. Don’t know if he got cut or what. Either way, I would hope for *some* affiliation, even if with a youth club side.

    • Vic

Rubio Rubin has agreed to sign a contract with FC Utrecht in Holland when he turns 18.

  • M

Why bring inFlores when he is a situation in Germany? None of these guys appear to be abroad, currently

  • Victor

Do we still use the residency program anymore? It seems none of the players are from there anymore.

    • Vic

We still use residency. However, the residency program is for players from ages 15-17. Its a prep for the U17 World Cup. Its only an 18 month program, once players are done with it they return to their club team. When you see the roster even for the U17s you will see the club team each player is affiliated at the time even thought technically they’re with the U17 team in Florida. There’s been some opinion articles written to get rid of the program but I haven’t seen anything from USSF. I hope they keep the program. Many players in MLS academies have long commutes to practice and the practices are once a day. The Bradenton program is a residency and practice is twice a day.

How often is this thing played? I feel like every month there’s another Milk Cup
