Landon Donovan

The 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup kicks off today in Chicago, with the U.S. Men’s National Team taking on Panama, and Episode 57 of The SBI Show takes a closer look at the match-up at Soldier Field.

Co-host Garrett Cleverly and I discuss the key match-ups, the key players, and give our predictions on the final outcome.

We also take a look at how some Americans Abroad have fared recently, including Clint Dempsey, Terrence Boyd and Michael Bradley.

Give Episode 57 of The SBI Show a listen after the jump:

What did you think of the show? Agree with our take on the final? How do you see the match going?

Love the USA red and white stripes kit. I really hope the USA keeps this design as their regular kit. It’s very distinguished much like Argentina’s baby blue and white, Brazil’s yellow, etc.

No, please don’t encourage that. These kits are a mess. However, the away kit is lovely…

Wow, Ives, I disagree completely with your take on the Klinsman suspension. It is hard to criticize CONCACAF for falling back to the actual FIFA rules. CONCACAF is often attacked for doing it’s own thing and making suspect decisions. This time, they follow the letter of the law and still get bashed. The coach made a ma$$ive and irresponsible mistake in a semifinal and that is the bottom line.

Still a good episode previewing the game though. Cheers!

Players were getting fouled left and right. Several of the fouls had the potential to seriously injure players. Very few of the fouls were even getting called on the Honduran players. They deserved at least 5 yellow cards and got zero. USA should have had at least 2 PK’s and there is a good argument for a 3rd.
What were Klinsman’s options? Protest a game you won? File a complaint to FIFA or Concacaf? None of these things help your players not get injured late in a game. Klinsman did the only thing he could do which was show the ref how he felt about the fouls. I back Klinsman 100% and I think the xtra game suspension is totally out of line. I think Stu Holden or anyone else who has had a serious injury will as well.

Whether JKs motivations had anything to do with ‘protecting his players’ which is entirely conjecture, it has nothing to do with the decision by CONCACAF which was…to follow the rules.

Completely agree. And I’ll take it a step further, it’s a overt middle finger to the US by CONCACAF, an attempt to give an advantage to the opponent.

Klinsmann with the American Outlaws ? Have AO really even showed up for the Gold Cup ?

    • Mister JC

Or at the very least, is disrespectful to the people that raised him and wiped his bum when he couldn’t do it himself. For shame, Garrett, for shame…

I also agree with the referee assessment… Quesada did a very poor job of officiating. Concacaf’s ineffectualness with the added benefit of hindsight is even more of a joke. When there is a choice between doing nothing and at least showing your players that you understand they have been put in an absurd position i am of the opinion that the latter is the correct choice.

On the other hand, how dare he toss a ball at the turf! Let’s all just be thankful that he didn’t go to the extreme of scowling at a linesman or wearing white after labor day. Children watch these games, you know.
