Before a potential El Clasico meeting in Spain, superstar wingers Neymar and Cristiano Ronaldo will first meet in the United States.

On Tuesday, the New England Revolution officially announced an international friendly between Brazil and Portugal for Sept. 10, the same date as the USMNT’s World Cup Qualifier against Mexico in Columbus. Tickets for the friendly will go on sale next Tuesday, July 9, at 10 a.m. ET.

Kickoff is set for 8:30 p.m. ET at the home of the Revolution, Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. Since the match will be held during an official FIFA international window, fans should expect some of the nations’ best talent to be on display that night.

“It is always a thrill to come to the United States and I am very happy to play against Portugal in Boston at Gillette Stadium on September 10,” Neymar said in New England’s press release. “The Boston-area has a very large Brazilian population and I invite all of our fans in the United States to come out and enjoy the match.”

The two world powers last met in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, playing out a scoreless draw in their final group stage match. The last friendly between Brazil and Portugal finished 6-2 in favor of the South Americans.

What do you make of this announcement? Excited to see two international powers square off on American soil? Planning to attend?

  1. Hmmm. We can’t get a WC qualifier or even a Gold Cup Game in Foxboro but we can get this kind of game. And on a Tuesday night too. I wonder if they’ll bring in Sod or just play on their crappy field turf?

All things considered, I’ll opt for the US-Mexico game on TV

  2. I hope Kraft & Co. have the capability of pulling it of logistically… When Brazil and Mexico played a couple of years ago (midweek) it was a disaster. Hours of time spent in the parking lot trying to get out. If you’re going, take the 2nd half of the day off and get there early and park a mile or two away from the stadium so you can get out.

  3. This game will absolutely sell-out. Large Portuguese and Brazilian populations in MA. Just look at the Revolution youth teams.

  4. It would be nice of either NBCSN or ESPN to pick up friendlies like this played in the US. I’m sure a lot of people would record or tune in to see Ronaldo and Neymar play. If the USNT is playing at the same time I’m sure they wouldn’t show the game so I guess we’ll see if Fox Sports1 will get the ball when it goes on air.

  5. Wow, that’s a friendly of the highest quality. At first I thought the counter programming against US Mexico was less than ideal but now I think it’s a good thing. Makes the US the soccer location for the whole hemisphere with obviously a few night owl Portuguese/European eyeballs as well.

  6. Anyone who’s been in Boston after Brazil has won a world cup knows there’s a lot of Brazilians there. There’s a lot of Geese in Boston too. I expect a sellout.
