After Saturday night’s New York Red Bulls victory over Real Salt Lake, Tim Cahill sat in his locker with a right knee that was severely swollen.

So it is no surprise that Major League Soccer that MLS All-Stars head coach Peter Vermes has added Philadelphia Union forward Jack McInerney to the All-Star Game roster in place of Cahill. It’s the first All-Star selection for McInerney, who has ten goals this season, good for the fourth-best total in the league.

The 20-year-old Georgia native is also the first Union player to be selected for this year’s All-Star game, set to take place on Wednesday at Sporting Park in Kansas City against AS Roma of Serie A.

McInerney was in Chicago with the U.S. Men’s National Team for Sunday’s Gold Cup Final victory. He was with the U.S. team during the group stage before being replaced for the knockout rounds. McInerney joined the team after playing for the Philadelphia Union in Saturday’s 1-0 win vs. the Vancouver Whitecaps.

What do you think of this news? Happy to see McInerney make it to Kansas City after all? Think he should have been selected in the first place? Worried about Cahill’s injury?

  1. Was Obafemi Martins even thought of at all? Right there, MLS just ignored Africa and yes more people in one country than the people who watch football in USA will not be watching. You want to grow, look to the big countries in Africa (the same place European clubs go to for top players).

  2. Why was Vermes the one to choose the replacement? Shouldn’t it have been Garber because Garber was the one who picked Cahill?

  3. Alvarez of RSL had better get a suspension from the Disciplinary Committee for that cheap shot on Cahill. I lost a bit of respect for RSL, which is rightly considered a model MLS franchise, for their “all fouls, all the time” tactics. Not surprised that Steele, Cahill et al. lost their temper.

    • Well well. That’s two weeks in a row that RSL has resorted to thuggery. Tried to take out Kamara six seconds into the game vs. KC.
