This is awesome for US soccer – from the MNT to MLS and on down to city rec leagues for elementary school kids. The best any other pro sports teams in the US can manage are things like the Miami Heat and their white t-shirts giveaway or thunder sticks at other teams. Regardless of what people think of differing sports, soccer TIFO beats any other fan participation. If someone says they don’t like what Portland displayed just because their team did it better, put your phalus away because it’s not a measuring contest.
This TIFO is AwESoME! ….however, as someone who watches all the Timbers games on TV, the crowd overall seemed only halfway excited and the Timbers Army did a FAR inferior job of incorporating U.S./Yanks themes into their chants—a la Seattle — and seemed to only have two or three chants the entire game. Again, well done Portland, but FAR below the Seattle experience !
Some new chants, new capos, new fans, no mics, overpriced tickets, and lower tier teams.
I suspect part of the problem with some chants is their similarity to Timbers chants, which was no doubt intended to make them easier to learn, but which may have just been confusing, particularly to the more inebriated. The person I was with thought at least a couple of the capos were having communication problems too.
Meh – way to make it about you, Portland…Community and club? Outside of Oregon, there wasn’t anyone watching the game that cared about community or club…
If you look along the bottom of the stands, it says “Everyone has something to stand for.” Some will stand for Club, some Country, and some their Communities. I see nothing wrong with this in any way what so ever.
Didn’t even see it the words at the bottom. Just not that impressed with the message/size although it’s gotta be tough to fit things into a minor league baseball stadium.
Funny, it was too big for minor league baseball, which is why the baseball team got the boot. (When it was first occupied by a baseball team, that team was part of what was widely considered the third major league.)
And soccer was played in it long before baseball.
Nice try at dredging up an old insult, but it just doesn’t hold water.
You don’t care about your community? The tifo was general – it didn’t specify Portland or Timbers. It meant whatever community and whatever club are important to you.
Supply/Demand: mostly it was the $125 seats that seemed empty … I’m Timbers Army and I couldn’t justify paying $35 to watch the US thrash Belize. Would’ve paid that for better competition. $125 as the highest-priced ticket seemed excessive.
Well done, Portland. US Soccer would be wise to help if d ways for Sestyle and Sportland to have grass Fields. These folks have set the bar for stadium environment. US soccer fans are putting other sports fan bases to shame.

Did they even show this on TV besides the one second on the half time highlights? I had to record the game and when the recording started, the walk outs/anthems were over.
True – that’s a huge disservice to the fans by not showing it, especially less than a week after the 4th of July!
Fox Soccer Channel showed it. Had to call my cable provider 2 hours before the game and buy a sports tier package. Cost me an extra $7 on my bill. But I get to see all the games this month for the Gold Cup. Now if only a deal could be made with BeIN sports so we can see overseas US games on another cable provider besides Direct TV. Altogether it bothers me that you can’t see every US game on the same channel say, ESPN 2. Or simply a channel major channel on a basic channel package. WCQ qualifying games have been shown on ESPN and regular Fox Channel. Feels like every game is on a different channel. Sucks for fans.
I get Bein on cable. Had to switch recently from directv to cable because of dish problems but was pleasantly surprised that it didn’t really impact the amount of soccer I could see. May depend on your cable company though.
Dish has BeIN.
Freakin Portland, well done! Is there any talk at all about putting down grass full time there? Any WCQ would be awesome at Jeld Wen
There is always talk of grass, but not realistic though. Nothing a few million dollars in ongoing investment couldn’t solve of course (complete redo of drainage, grow lights, etc.). The stadium has had grass in it before but because it is built dug into an old creek bed (and the creek is in a pipe now running under it) and dug down below ground level (approximately the level of the lower stars to the words on the TIFO is ground level for most of the stadium), grass never grew well there and constantly had to be resodded as it died quickly and was a mud pit from October to June with the constant drizzle. Sure the EPL can do it (but as I said above nothing a few million in infrastructure and ongoing maintenance can’t accomplish). The reality is that MLS / Timbers and the City simply don’t have that kind of cash sitting around with nothing better to do with it. Sure, we put in temporary grass in 1997 and 98 (last time the MNT came here), but that is less than desirable as it likely would shorten the life of the rather expensive turf we invested in for 2011. Someday, but not soon I am afraid.

A few reasons for relative quiet:
Some new chants, new capos, new fans, no mics, overpriced tickets, and lower tier teams.

Awesome, well done TA & PDXAO

I didn’t see that. Thanks for pointing it out. I should say that it’s better than nothing. This didn’t happen in 2011/12.
Get over yourself. Awesome tifo and I would love to see more USMNT team games in Portland.
What are you even talking about? There’s nothing there about Portland at all.
Everyone should care about community. that’s a pretty universal concept. If you don’t, you’re the problem.
How do you not understand the message? Its less than 10 words…

I see no baseball in this 1950s photo…

I think that Uncle Sam there is actually pointing at you to go back under your bridge.

Cool I guess but how did Portland not sell out this game? Pink hats.

Because it’s the Gold Cup, and they’re playing Belize? It’s not exactly a WCQ…
Not bad. But it ain’t Dortmund.

That’s what I thought when I saw it. Dortmund’s creepy face peering through glasses > Uncle Sam, unfortunately.
Looks like someone who designed the TIFO was inspired by BVB.
Still, Portland and Seattle have just thrown down the gauntlet to Columbus and KC for the remaining two qualis.
This makes me happy.
That is spectacular. Well done, peoples. Well done.
Yeah, I saw folks hating on Portland’s lack of atmosphere and I was like what?
Maybe that is because it lies with FSC to show the crowd?
Even CUSA matches in Portland are easier to get excited for than a minnow like Belize.

FSC did not show it but Unimas and the Univision live stream did.
FSC Fail! That tifo is awesome!!!!!

+ 1
Jeld-Wen Field dimensions are only 110 x 74 yards. Well off the standard (and FIFA preferred) of 120 x 75 yards.
You mean just off the largest it can be, 120 x 80 yards?
